Why don't I get text message notifications when I am on the phone?

While I'm having a phone conversation, I do not receive any notification of any text messages that may come in.  Is there anything that I can do so that my phone will beep in my ear to let me know that I have a text message.  Very frustrating especially since I'm on the phone a lot.

As a frequent user myself, I know it's important to have those notifications coming through. Do you have sound notifications on for text messages? Head into Messages > Menu > Settings > Notifications - From there you can choose the notification method on your device.
