New user dumb question #2... I assume that if I'm in an area that has cellular service available, that I can tap into the web. If that's true, why do I need to set up a wifi connection as it advises in the manual?

WiFi data usage won't go against your 3G data usage... not an issue with the current UNLIMITED data plans ... but who knows what's going to happen now that VZN announced they will start providing "tiered" data plans for the iPhone .. Other plans are likely to be tiered as contracts expire ... but who knows for sure? And yes - WiFi SHOULD be faster than 3G ... YMMV

Internet over 3G is slow. Streaming videos are sometimes unwatchable and the time it takes downloading files is much longer, compared to wifi.
I made the mistake of subscribing to Verizon VCast before I tapped into wifi at work and home. Unusable.
Hopefully, "4G" will take things to a new level. And yes, the other point also made is key. Using wifi doesn't count against your data total.

Also you might want to consider that just because you have a good network signal this does not always mean that the 3G network is available, the signal for data and calls isnt always equal.
