WiFi hotspot loses internet connection

I enabled the WiFi hotpsot feature on my Droid2 so I can use it to connect my laptop to the internet. It usually starts up just fine, makes connections to both the PC and the internet, but will later unexpectedly lose the connection. My PC "network and sharing center" will show that the PC is still connected to the Droid2 but not to the internet. The Droid also usually says it is still connected to the PC, but nothing is being transmitted, although sometimes it loses the connection to the PC altogether.

So, I have to disconnect the wireless connection on my PC, turn off the hotspot on the Droid, and start over again. Sometimes when I turn off the hotspot, the Droid2 will actually reboot itself, I have no idea why that happens as I haven't touched the power button. I haven't been able to determine why any of this happens, although it occurs more frequently during network usage by multiple programs on the PC (eg, email and internet browsing at the same time -- which of course is quite common), but sometimes occurs when there is little to no network activity. This can be a big problem if the internet connection is lost while I am downloading updated software for the PC or other large files. In any case, it is unreliable, irritating and time wasting.

Previously, I tethered a Blackberry to my PC, and never had this problem, though I recognize tethering works differently from a WiFi hotspot. Anybody have any ideas how to avoid or fix this problem with the Droid?

Sorry for the problems you're having with this hotspot losing connection so frequently. For you I have included specific troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue.

1. Remove the battery from your phone and leave off for a full minute

2. Re-insert battery and power phone on

3. Dial *228 and choose option 2

4. When the programming has been completed, press OK and your phone will power off, then back on.

5. Reset your password for your Hotspot

6. Update the password on your phone as well. This will help avoid any corrupt connection you may have had previously.

To reset the password for your Hotspot: Settings > Wireless and Networks > WiFi Settings > Manage Networks > long press on the network you want to modify > Enter new password

Alternately, you can long press on the network you want to modify and select "Forget this network", then back out and re-join it at which point it'll prompt you for a password.

you mention both a laptop & pc connecting at the same time to the phone hotspot.

you're asking a lot from your phone.

i can connect with home depot's unsecured wireless with my laptop but not the dx, from the same spot in wendy's.

if the phone loses internet for whatever reason, yeah the laptop/pc will lose it too.

you kill the phone batt with it being a hotspot

Sorry, I was using the terms PC and laptop interchangeably -- I am only using one computer on the hotspot at a time.

OK, I did all that (updated the sofware on my Droid, and reset my passwords) and it still loses the internet connection, the phone has to be shut off, restarted, and reconnected. It happened 3 times in the last hour, which is extremely annoying and frustrating. Any other ideas on how to fix it?

I've never been able to maintain a WiFi connection with my Droid2 since I've owned it. It's rather annoying.

I've heard various things being the cause of the problem. I have heard that the cause of the problem is due to it being an issue with Froyo. My hope is that Gingerbread fixes this problem. That is IF the D2 even gets it which isn't looking very promising. :smileysad:
