Has anyone experienced the phone shutting down and rebooting. I can have my phone sitting next to me and it will go to a black screen and the eye pops up and reboots.

I had the same issue, called tech support yesterday and they indicated this was not a known issue.  However, I have found some info on other blogs that indicate there are a few phones doing this.  They have offered to replace it for free, and I am just waiting to get the new one in.

said because I have an issue it would be only a couple of days.  They are overnighting it.  Seems like they take care of the replacement orders before people who are on a waiting list to get a new one

I too requested a replacement through the store and they sent me a refurbished instead of a new phone. If you returned it within the 30 days of the original purchase, they have to replace it with e NEW phone not refurbished. Be very careful. All new phones are not to be shipped until 8-31-2010 anything before that probably is refurbished.

Indicates others are having this issue or potentially something with a setting on a task killer (if you have one), to do an auto reboot

yea, task killers are the main cause of this & they are totally unnecessary in an android system.

I've had this problem as well.  I will be receiving one via Fed Ex 8/19.
There are two schools of thought as to Task Killers.  I have Adv Task Killer.  Others say no need for it.  However, the techs at VZW corporate in my town that have DX's have a task manager and do not experience the rebooting and power cycling that we have experienced.  He also checked my apps and found no mal-ware or mal-apps.  I refuse to accept that power cycling and rebooting at random is a normal function of a phone.  If I wanted to be told I was using my phone wrong I would have gone to AT&T.

I will tell you I had my phone for 2 weeks and it rebooted 5 times and on last Friday I called VZ tech support and we went 3 way with Motorola and the woman said not to use a Task Killer because it kills some of the important things to stop running. So we did a Hard Reset on my phone and the tech told me to install all extra apps that I had on my phone except the Task Killer and then go to the Store were I ordered my phone so I could get a replacement on the way. Due to not guaranteeing the Hard reset to fix my problem and my 30 days getting close to an end and my replacement arrived yesterday and before Hard Reset my phone was rebooting every 2 days and the 4 days I waited on my phone I didn't have 1 reboot I don't know if it had anything to do with the Task Killer but just thought I would throw that in there.

Rebooting of the DX was the major point why I returned that phone.

I had my DX for 4 days and it was rebooting constantly, about 7 - 9 times a day.

VZ tech told me that it is a known issue with DX and therefore I returned it thinking to get Incredible.

However, my brother-in-law that has Incredible and his phone reboots too (though not as often as my DX). That makes me thinking what if problem is not a phone (Droid X) in particular, rather than Moto Blur skin or Android OS in general.

I was reading that rebooting may in fact be related to Advance Task Killer if it is being set to Auto-Kill mode as it could be killing some running processes which are required by OS.If Auto-Kill is disabled and applications are being killed manually it should resolve reboot problem.

DX hardware has 512 MB of RAM but in my case I was ending up with less than 50 MB (less than 10%) of RAM only after an hour of phone just sitting there without single application being touched by myself. I understand that about 200 MB is being used by OS and another 100 MB is being used by all essential subprocesses (Moto Blur) but that should leave me with 200 MB of RAM not 50. Those little pesky bloatware programs that VZ forces on you should be either disabled, uninstalled, or not being loaded into memory constantly.

In regards to controversy of needed or not Advance task killer, I am personally felling that I needed that just to kill all of the bloatware that VZ placed on that phone and which is being loaded constantly into memory. So as far as I am concern, issue with reboot is all VZ fault and that is why this is a "known issue" for them.
