It is a design feature that you cannot *type* the time, you have to select it. What should happen after you click "New Event" is this: The "Create Event" screen comes up, you select What (event title) and Who (attendees, for example from your Contacts), then under the Start and End headings it will list a date and time. The date and time it sets initially for the event will depend on which calendar view you were using and where you click-held on that view to create the event. The monthly view will select whatever time you set for your day to start (8 am for example). The weekly and daily view will start with the time that matches the vertical position where where you click-held on that day to create the event. To change the time for your event, look for the time under Start and next to the date and tap it. A window should pop up showing the time in much larger text, with little + buttons above the hours and the minutes, and little - buttons below. The + and - buttons let you increment or decrement the hours and minutes to whatever you want. Then click "Set" to save the time you chose, finish creating the event, and save it. An alternative to creating the event on the phone, for those times that you can wait until you get to a full-size computer, is to create the event at https://calendar.google.com or go to a calendar that already has the event and invite your gmail account as a participant.
