changing ringtones

I have a fave ringtone for when I receive text messages. I use handcent. But over the last few days something strange has been happening. My ringtones change without me changing them. I can have the same ringtone sound off several times in a day. Then a different sound comes out. I check and my ringtone has been changed to the new sound. It seems to happen at random. anyone else experience this?

Its a ringtone I downloaded from the android market. I figured out what was causing the change in ringtone. It happened twice tonight after I connected my droid x to my computer.

I have different ringtones set for different notifications/contacts and occasionally when I get a completely wrong sound (a different or default sound) when I get a notification or incoming call.  It seems to happen randomly and have no idea what causes it, but my settings don't change.  So even if my wife calls me and it plays the wrong ringtone, the settings haven't changed and the next time she calls it plays the correct one.  It's not exactly what you are describing, but it's similar so I thought I'd share.  Sorry I don't have any answers though.

Check to see if the contacts that are giving you different ringtones have multiple accounts that are "Linked."   If the are, unlink them and the check to be sure that the assigned ringtone is the same for each account.  If they aren't, edit each account so the ringtone you want is the same on each.  After you do this, then link the accounts again.

Not a guaranteed fix but something to check......

How did you assign those ringtones to your list of available ringtones? When I had assigned the custom ringtones through the music player, my phone would forget sometimes that they were available and play a different tone. Once I moved the files to the default path android likes, the phone never forgot them again even after a factory reset.

Path: sd card/media/audio/ringtones

I assign ringtones either thru the person's contact entry. For handcent I assign a ringtone thru settings.

I meant how did you get the phone to add the custom ringtones to the main ringtone list so that you can then use that list to select the specific tones for your contacts? Did you open the music app, played the tone press menu and set as ringtone? Or something else?

Yeah that would do it. The phone can't access the ringtones stored on the sd card while the computer is is accessing the sd card. Glad you figured it out.
