deleting text contacts

How do I delete a contact from my TEXT contact list from the Charge?  It seems to have saved every person and email address I've ever searched or had contact with.

when I go to messaging and hit new message then hit contacts, I get a long list of every person I ever sent a text to or got a text from or email address i have imputted into google search or facebook....  i dont want some of these contacts in my phone and need to delete them.  These contacts are NOT in my regular contact list, only under messaging.  I NEED to delete them off this list.  Is there a way to do this?

Dear Mercy,

There does not seem to be a way to selectively erase contacts from the Contacts or Recent lists in the messaging app, at least not one that I could figure out.

I am also guessing that the apps Wildman suggested will perform a mass wipe of history and cache data from the phone, and will not allow you to select what you want to erase and what to keep. Also, I think the Contacts list in the messaging app imports all the contacts from elsewhere in the phone, so that if you have contacts in Google or Facebook, they will be on both the main Contacts list and on the Contacts list in the messaging app. I don't think these will be erased by the apps Wildman is talking about.

no, those apps did not work.  I specifically want to delete an email address from this contact list. It does not appear in my main contact list only the messaging app.  this is very important that i find a way to delete this email from my phone.  any other suggestions?  I have searched EVERY setting on the phone and I could not find a way either.

I think WCMack is right that it can not be deleted, the apps was a shot in the dark because they work for some apps but I never had to delete the info you are asking..

By the way when you said that the site made you make another login, I am guessing you open the page and it met you with a forum profile completion form...  Actually you could close all browsers and then it would allow you to use your original log, this is a site bug for some while and happens when you log into your account and then go to forum without closing browser, I get it all the time and have reported this issue.

yes, you are right, it brought me back to the complete profile page... oh well... no biggie.

If anyone can find a solution to this contact deletion problem, PLEASE post.... for all you programers out there.... MAKE AN APP FOR THAT!!!  :smileysad:

Mercy, are you talking about the contacts that show up in the messaging application when you tap "New Message" then "Recent?"  If so I could not find a way to delete these either.  However, I found a way to delete them from another application on the phone.  Go to Phone and tap the Call Log button.  Scroll through this list and see if the number or address you want to delete is in this list also.  If so, and you delete it from the call log it will disappear from the messaging recent contact list as well.  Also, you can try this.  I did this once by accident and it cleared that list for me.  This should not delete your contacts, only the ones in the recent list in messaging.  From a Home screen touch the menu hard key on the bottom left of your phone, then tap Settings, then Applications, then Manage Applications.  It is probably in the Running tab, but if not just look through the All tab and find the "Messaging" app.  Tap the name of the Messaging app then tap "Clear data."

no, it isn't in my recent contacts.  its just in the contacts list in the messaging app.  its not in my call log either as its an email address and not a phone number.

Dear Mercy,

I believe that any contact that is listed in your main Contacts list (accessible from the Contacts app icon - this is also the Contacts list for your phone and your email apps) will also appear in the Contacts list you see when you press the "Contacts" button on the "New Message" screen for the messaging app. The only way I know of to delete a contact from this list is to delete it from the main Contacts list, which is probably not what you want to do. The list of names/numbers you see when you hit the "Recent" button in that view is all the people who have texted you or you have texted in some period of time (don't know how long)...this list appears not to be editable.

Perhaps you can tell us why managing these lists just for the messaging app is important to you. Thanks.

Dear Davidoo,

I tried the "Clear data" method a couple of times, and it does not clear any information from the "Recent" list in the "New Message" window.

WCMack I believed OP said the names want in their contacts and this is their issue. The apparently must save any unknown address or number sent to.

This email address is not on my "recents" menu or in my Main Contact list.  It is ONLY in my Messaging app and also in my Main Contact list when I go to GROUPS then NOT ASSIGNED.  It is there too.  I cannot delete this email from either list.

The apps suggested do lock the contact list and thats great, but I would rather just delete them out of my phone.  I need to get this contact out of my phone.  Any other suggestions?

I am going out on a limb and guess that you dont want someone to see the contacts you are sending to, here is a possible work around, download Perfect App Protector and place a password on the apps that you do not want to be opened, I use it and it works very well...

Check it out at https://market.android.com/details?id=com.morrison.applock&feature=search_result

neither of those apps worked.  Usually when you want to delete a text or contact you press and hold on it.  Under messaging contacts, it does not give you this option.  I MUST delete some of these contacts.  Can anyone help?
