My droid 2 did not work in puerto rico but my BB didnt miss a beat i could not get data or email.
I had the same issue when I went to PR over Halloween weekend. I contacted Verizon and was given this solution (which did solve the problem / allowed me to get my e-mails / texts / etc)
From Home Screen - go to Options -> Data Manager - > Data Delivery - and 'check' (turn on) the Data Roaming box. I was also told by Verizon rep that I would not charged extra for 'roaming' charges when in PR.
