I got an email attachment from Word 7 with the .docx extension. Droid X couldn't open it. File is not corrupt - I opened it on my desktop. Is this a permanent problem?

I'm guessing it's using quick office which is sometimes flaky. May need to get an app like Documents to Go which will allow you to open word documents, powerpoint, and excel files. The paid version allows you to edit those files and adds pdf support.

or it's not using an app at all....which you will need to view office docs.

I think you're dead on target. I didn't remember reading that there were any document readers for Microsoft documents pre-installed. However I'm pretty sure there are free, or inexpensive apps on the marketplace for this.

Alright, wait a minute. Both Blackberry and Window Mobile device come with an app to view, edit and create MS Office docs, yet Android gets all this hype and no one ever points out that you have to buy, as in pay for, an app that is absolutely critical, at least to my use of a smartphone, that comes free with BB and WM. Excuse me, but I just think that this really cripples the functionality of the device, at least for my purposes anyway. The primary reason I want a smartphone, besides making phone calls, is reading and sending my office email which regularly contains MS Office docs, and viewing and editing the attachments, and now you tell me that I can't do that with Android unless I spend some money. This isn't a knock on Verizon, but definitely on the Android OS.
