I would try the "CLEAR CACHE" procedure to see if it fixes this first. It's fairly benign and is a quick way to clear any garbeage in the phone before going to extremes like Factory resets, etc. So try this and report back.
Wiping cache partition
- Power off
- Power On Holding Home Key
- When Andy with Exlamation Point Shows up Press BOTH Volume keys
- Use Volume Keys to navigate to "wipe cache partition" and tap power button to select
- Wait for it to finish and select reboot system

Thank you to the Community for your responses.
Were you still experiencing the issue? Is this the primary Gmail account on the device or a secondary? Please post if you need further assistance.
Thank you

I can't count the number of people that I know that are having this problem. It is very rare that my GMail syncs on it's own. Yes I have the power control widget on my screen and yes it is set to auto synch, but it doesn't. My wife's DX has the same issue. It should not be a surprise that this, like so many other problems, started with the upgrade to Gingerbread. I'm beginning to think that the patch to fix all of our DX Gingerbread problems is a pink unicorn. Mythical in existence, often talked about, but never seen. Perhaps one of you Verizon folks could update us on the status of it.

Just curious - have you actually done the Wipe/Clear Cache procedure I posted up above? Personally, I do not have any "syncing" issue with GMAIL or Google Calendar for that matter. I get notifications when I get a GMAIL email - along w a ringtone. And it arrives (or sends) instantaneously for me. Yes, I did the CLEAR CACHE procedure within the 1st week of getting GB.
The "fix update to GB" is all speculation right now as to when it will arrive. Even MOTO is being pretty quiet on their forum about it. The only "confirmation" that we've seen was posted in THIS forum last week; but no actual date - just soon.
Good luck. (PS - I don't work for Verizon. Just in the hot tub with everyone else.)

Yep, tried the cache clear procedure, but it didn't help. It's interesting that when I cycle the auto synch button off and back on or go to the Gmail app and referesh, it will fetch my email and will generally continue to synch for a few hours and then it stops again. It is terribly frustrating. As for the GB update, that is why I said it is a pink unicorn. I won't believe in it until I see it with my own eyes. Thanks for the response.

Hello devildog1983,
I know email is a very important form of communication. I do understand you have attempted to clear the cache and turn sync off and back on and you were not successful. In this case, with the type of device you have in order to remove and re-add the gmail account for success we would need to complete a factory reset. This will erase everything on the device so please back up prior if desired. You can do so by navigating to Settings>Privacy>Factory Data Reset>Reset Phone>Erase Everything. After the device power cycles it will prompt you to re-program by choosing option 1. Please observe and let me know if this was successful for you. Thank you.

An email is indicated in my GMail Inbox. At the top next to "Inbox" there is a "(1)", indicating an email in the Inbox.
However, no email shows up to open. There is not one in the All Mail folder, or anywhere else.
I suppose the conclusion is that the emails are "pushed". They just don't show up.
I go to my pc and open GMail and there is the email in my Inbox. It opens, as it should. I check my phone and it only shows up after I move it to another folder (trash, friends, etc.).
I have cleared cache and reset the phone since GB. Tominquebo, I have tried the troubleshooting steps suggested.
One of the main reasons I switched to a "smartphone", namely this phone, was for remote email access.
I suppose remote knowing that I have an email, but I have to go to a pc to open it for some emails, is the best I can expect?
This has happened multiple times since GB. Maybe a handful of times in the almost one year before that. Yes, GB has exacerbated the issue, but did I have to even say that?

droidsw-I haven't been made aware of the problems you are experiencing with your GMail messages.
Now that I see this forum, I'd like to ask if you have more than 1 GMail account set up on your Droid X?
Please go to Settings>Accounts>Select the Gmail Account you are having problems with
What do you have enabled to sync? (Contacts, Calendar, Books, EMail)
Now if this is the only GMail account you have on the phone and the account settings are showing the gmail should be syncing, you will need to Hard/Master Reset the device. That is the only way possible to delete the primary GMail account from Android devices. Keep in mind, with master resetting, it will take the phone back to its original factory settings so you will lose ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications. Therefore, you will need to know the Gmail email address & password.
At this point, I recommend this final step in troubleshooting in order for us to determine if the phone isn't syncing because of an issue with the phone/software itself or because of GMail.
Are these steps you have already taken?

Everything is set to sync, but I could change that to just email and contacts because I don't use the others.
As I mentioned, this has occurred across the three Droid X's I have had dating back to last Aug.
I have performed many hard resets.
This is an intermittent issue. It might be days, or weeks before it repeats. I have posted in other forums, including Google.
Thanks for your reply.

These emails will stay in the outbox for hours. Plain emails, no large attachments.
I have even rebooted the phone and it was still there. I usually just send another redundant email and it blows right past the stuck email. The stuck email eventually pushes through.
Again. Intermittent. Not a big deal.

I had a similar issue to this one once. It looked like the email was not sending. After checking my gmail through a computer and verifying that the email was sent, I cleared the data on the gmail application on the phone. It forced a full resync of all my emails associated with that address. I also had to setup my notification settings again for gmail. I haven't seen it repeated for me since.

And, while on the subject. There is also another intermittent issue with GMail where an outgoing email will get stuck in the outbox and it says "sending" in red font.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
