Turning off the notification bar is not a good idea. Then you will receive no notification such as Email, Message, or even when your battery is dangerously low.
If you are refering to the notification bar, it is there for a reason. There may or may not be an apps out there in appsland which will allow you to shut it off. As for the settings in Droid X, as far as I know, there is none. However, as I stated above, it is there for a reason.

or you can just go into the applications option on the settings menu
open manage applications
choose running in the top icon bar
the apps are alphabetical so scroll down to music tap the icon
choose force stop
all this does is close the app so it wont hurt anything but it does clear the notification bar after you are done with the music player.
look for watchdog lite in the apps store its free and a good app closer with some options
