I removed my memory card thinking I could transfer songs from my pc to my droid. I had no luck in doing so, but when I re-installed my memory card, my phone is not recognizing it.. Any ideas?

Did you unmount the card before you removed it? If you did not unmount it, was the phone off or on? The SD card should be unmounted prior to removal if the phone is on. If the phone is off, it is safe to remove.
Next, when you replaced the card, did you remount it?
If none of these steps were taken, unfortunately you messed up your SD card and have to re-format it.

I just took the card out with the phone turned on. Ok,, so I understand I have to format the card, do I loose everything that's saved on my phone??? I don't think I had anything saved on the card.... so in the future, how do I go about dismounting prior to removing it? I just got the phone, so I am not sure how to even do that... Thanks so much for your help..

You may not need to format the card. Try mounting it and see if everything is there. You mount/unmount it by going to Menu->Settings->SD & phone storage. Then Scroll down to the Utilities section. If the card doesn't work after mounting it, then you can format it from the same section (the card has to be unmounted before you can format it).
Next time, instead of removing the card to connect it to your computer, just use the USB cable to connect the phone to your computer. Then both the internal phone storage and the card will show up as drives on your computer (if the drives don't show up, you may need to change the settings in the "Connect to PC" section of the settings menu).

Ah! Beat me to it jmadren . I may add, yes, if you format your card you lose everything, just like formating a disk on your computer. I might add a hint here. If you do tether your phone to your computer, which jmadren told you about, before you untether it, please, unhook it the correct way. If you have Windows, go to the task bar and click on the icon that looks like a usb cable. Then click on the item you wish to untether. Windows will then inform you that it is safe to unhook. If you don't do it the safe way, you just may wind up messing your SD card up.
