my email alert works maybe 30% of the time. sometimes when i hit refresh numerous emails pop in. i get all the text of these emails. just hit or miss notifications of their arrival.any ideas ?

Gmail, Exchange or POP3/imap account?
Could it be that your check frenquency is just set at a long interval?
In your settings, did you turn off "always connected" for the data option? (It entices you to turn off the feature by saying that turning it off may help with battery life. It does, a *little* but it will prevent GMail from doing push notifications and syncs.
