mobile data problems

I have samsung droid charge with latest up to date software as far as im concerned but i could be wrong because when i click check for updates it just automatically says i have the latest update or whatever. Is it suppossed to scan for it or what? Anyways mobile data says its on but its not. Cause when i go into about phone and look at my status it will say connecting and then say disconnected on my mobile connection. Only wifi works? Nothing happened to the phone either such as getting dropped or water damage or anything. So what's is wrong? It's really frustrating.
