the phone thinks it's been stolen.
you setup the locking mechanism, whether swype, numbers, etc and you're the only one who knows what you did, so not sure if verizon cs can even help.

Because of the security nature of this situation, you'll have to visit the Verizon store to get it unlocked. At least, I believe that is the case...

Correct! You must take your phone to your Verizon store and let them unlock it for you.

ttwjdw,
Good morning!
I'd like to try and save you a trip to the store, by giving the steps the an alternative reset that you can do from home.
Just follow the steps below!
- Press and hold the Power button then select Power off.
- If the device isn't responding to input, remove / replace the battery.
- Press and hold the Home key then press power button to turn on.
- Press the Power button while holding Home.
- From the Android Recovery screen (exclamation point with an android figure), press Volume Up / Down simultaneously.
- Select wipe data / factory reset then press the Power button.
- Select Yes -- delete all user data then press the Power button
- Reset process to may take approximately 1 minute.
- Ensure reboot system now is selected then press the Power button.
After the phone reboots, you'll be walked through the on-screen activation and Google log-in.
Please post back here if these steps resolved your concerns!
Thank you!

Hey Adam
Are you sure that the original poster actually owns the phone, or could he have stolen or found the phone and is not the owner of the phone?
this would have been better to let the store make sure that he is the original owner before working on unlocking it.

hmm thats a bit of a revalation that if my phone is stolen my lock is pointless if they know anything about resetting a phone....very comforting it should at least have a default asking for my ssn or something but thats way to easy granted it wipes the data it doesnt reimburse my 500 phone.

If you report it stolen the phone won't work on Verizon. They'd have to hack it to make it work on other carriers. Also they don't get your data as well.
Even MobileMe, and the iPhone doesn't work as someone just needs to wipe and if the iPhone is GSM it can be used on AT&T or T-Mobile.
