the phone thinks it's been stolen.

you setup the locking mechanism, whether swype, numbers, etc and you're the only one who knows what you did, so not sure if verizon cs can even help.

I think I've read about this before...

Because of the security nature of this situation, you'll have to visit the Verizon store to get it unlocked. At least, I believe that is the case...

& you definitely have to prove you're the owner if they can help at all.

i don't see a reset resolving the issue.

Correct! You must take your phone to your Verizon store and let them unlock it for you.

ttwjdw,

Good morning!

I'd like to try and save you a trip to the store, by giving the steps the an alternative reset that you can do from home.

Just follow the steps below!

  1. Press and hold the Power button then select Power off.
    1. If the device isn't responding to input, remove / replace the battery.
  2. Press and hold the Home key then press power button to turn on.
  3. Press the Power button while holding Home.
  4. From the Android Recovery screen (exclamation point with an android figure), press Volume Up / Down simultaneously.
  5. Select wipe data / factory reset then press the Power button.
  6. Select Yes -- delete all user data then press the Power button
    1. Reset process to may take approximately 1 minute.
  7. Ensure reboot system now is selected then press the Power button.

After the phone reboots, you'll be walked through the on-screen activation and Google log-in.

Please post back here if these steps resolved your concerns!

Thank you!

Hey Adam

Are you sure that the original poster actually owns the phone, or could he have stolen or found the phone and is not the owner of the phone?

this would have been better to let the store make sure that he is the original owner before working on unlocking it.

hmm thats a bit of a revalation that if my phone is stolen my lock is pointless if they know anything about resetting a phone....very comforting it should at least have a default asking for my ssn or something but thats way to easy granted it wipes the data it doesnt reimburse my 500 phone.

halcp - The lock is not pointless. It keeps people from getting into your data on the phone. Doesn't render the phone inoperable. If you store sensitive information on the SD card, that will be exposed even after a factory reset, or the procedure that will remain nameless on this board due to Terms of Service restrictions. If you have an app that would have sensitive information, look for an encryption feature. There are also locator/remote wipe apps in the market. Just search for 'remote wipte' for a list.

Elitist - Why buy an iPhone (Which has a smaller screen) and mobileme? There are plenty of locator/remote wipe apps for Android.

If you report it stolen the phone won't work on Verizon.  They'd have to hack it to make it work on other carriers.  Also they don't get your data as well.
Even MobileMe, and the iPhone doesn't work as someone just needs to wipe and if the iPhone is GSM it can be used on AT&T or T-Mobile.
