Are you using the stock keyboard or have you downloaded a replacment app and are using it instead? Sounds goofy to ask, I know.
I had issues similar to this and clearing out the cache, data and shutting off the auto correction for the keyboard (not an internet browser) actually helped. I had issues with both the stock keyboard and a replacement keyboard app. (Different yet similar issues really.)

I understand your discontent; I would be frustrated if my phone was freezing when I send a text message. Since clearing the Cache, History and Cookies has not fully resolved the issue, I think the root cause is a conflict with a third party application. Please run your phone in Safe Mode and see if the issue continues. If the issue stops you must remove the conflicting applications to resolve this issue. Your profile does not identify your phone model so I have included links with instructions for Safe Mode for both Droid and Droid 2 below.
