Boy I am amazed how many apps for this, I thought it wasnt even legal to have something like this. Thought the polices signal is a private transmission...

May not be illegal but very surprising.... The public having access to secure information transmitted to law enforcement just seems a bit of a risky situation..

I use it during bad weather you can stay up to date on what's happening a lot better then tv or radio reports.

I understand there is valid reasons that information like this may be helpful...

Police scanners are NOT illegal, but having a police scanner in your car might be illegal, it all depends on the state/local laws.
There usually isn't any private information broadcast across the police radio's anymore. The mobile computer system is what the police use to check people for wants/warrants/issues anymore.
Scanner radio is not everywhere either. How it works, people(volunteers) with base(home) scanners route the auto from a channel to through their internet connection to a website. The website then takes the information, and streams the audio to anyone with the web browser that wants to listen to a certain frequency. They do the same thing for air traffic controller websites. Scanner radio just picks up the streams that you want to listen to. Simple as that.
