question concerning battery life and if someone like me should get it

so ive done a search through the forum about the battery life and stuff about droid x and it kinda concerns me when i see about how people get about 9 hrs or something like that of battery life they seem to do so little.

during my day with my smartphone (the Nokia E71), i dont use bluetooth (never will either), im not on the internet for hours but would like to look around like check facebook and stuff for fun and youtube, i dont know if that GPS thing is needed or not, and i dont think i need my emails checked every 15 mins (im just a college student). i make maybe an hour or two of calling a day and about 50 or more texts in a day.

with that said, im not sure now if the droid x is the phone for me if it cant stay on long enough to fullfill the needs i have now with my nokia.

so can someone tell me more about this situation with the battery life and tell me if i should just forget getting the phone or not. thanks

You are comparing a standard cellphone device to a smart-phone, that like comparing a calculator to a laptop, there is a big difference in power usages between these devices and you can not expect the battery to last as long, a laptop normally holds good for a couple of hours with regular use (Just Example)... You are most likely going to notice a difference in power usage when dealing with any smart-phone device.  I suggest you invest into a extended battery and follow all the standard battery saver methods....

1. Disable Auto Backlight feature

2. Dim backlight down to a viewable but low light

3. Disable any unused apps in the background with Task Killer (Advance Task Killer works well)

4. Set email to retrieve once of day or on demand, primary emails can be set to retrieve more often (The more it checks the longer device pulls power for web access)

5. Turn off Wifi and Bluetooth when not in use.

If you follow these steps you should do better on battery life..

ok so with that said, me texting 50 to 100 times a day and talking onthe phone for a couple of hours with a few times on youtube shouldnt bring it down enough to put me in a bind till i get back to my room at around 7 or 8 at night?

and how much of an improvement does the extended have on this?

Here's the only correct answer you'll get...

It depends. (Actually, I edited this since Wildman always has great answers, this time is no exception. But this is mostly to make a point...LOL)

There are two things at play here with regard to battery life. The first issue is how the phone is used. The second one is how important are the Droid X's features to you and how much are you willing to put up with in order to use those features.

We'll tackle the first issue...well...first, I guess, why not....:smileyvery-happy:

Battery life and what affects it has been discussed ad nauseum around here. One big thing that doesn't come up a lot is the fact that the less signal strength the phone has to work with, the more battery consumption will occur. If I work at home, where I have a full signal, I can get roughly 36 hours of battery life. I check email several times an hour, use the phone (it's all I have, no landlines in my life), and surf the net some. Following the same usage patterns at the shop (where I get a steady single bar of signal), I can get almost 12-14 hours of battery life. I put the battery on the mobile charger during the ride home from work to get through the evening before bedtime. If you don't check email very often, use location-based services (weather radar, google searches, google maps, or talk very much, it's conceivable to get that 36 hours and maybe even more. It just depends (there's that phrase again).  Regardless of what I do where, I charge the phone every night. Without fail. Period.

The second issue has to do with what the phone is worth to you and how much trouble are you willing to endure in order to enjoy the benefits of this fantastic phone. Only you can decide this, no else can, and I don't even care to, so there...LOL Seriously, if you can't be bothered with having a car charger or two handy and two home chargers, one for home, one for work, maybe even another one in your bag or purse or whatever as a spare, and putting the phone on a charger at least once a day, sometimes twice, then the Droid X probably isn't for you. I can't think of any other smartphone that would be, but again, that's for you to decide.

(And someone is gonna say this, so it might as well be me...If you depend on the ability to charge the phone via USB on a regular basis, then the Droid X is MOST CERTAINLY NOT FOR YOU!!...:smileyvery-happy:) Yeah, I couldn't resist...

Okay, from my perspective (and I consider myself a power user, whatever the hell that means these days), the X, with its big screen, hotspot feature, and general coolness, it's worth every bit of the little bit of trouble I go through to keep it charged and ready. It's first phone I've owned in years that I haven't wanted to toss into a cowfield after a few weeks or months of using it (including and especially iPhones). And another thing...I didn't qualify for a phone upgrade at the time, so I paid full no-contract price for mine.

But....it still depends...on you.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Wow!  Just the fact that you were able to get to this forum, and post such a detailed response all from your Droid X makes me even more anxious to get the X!   Less than two weeks!

A skill I'd love to learn for times when I'm posting on the X. I do it frequently, but not long posts like the one above.

Yes.

Except for the re-stocking fee. $30.., I think?

Take that up with the Verizon store people from this point forward.

that sounds alot better than being $200 out with a phone that isnt working out for me lol

is there any word about larger extended batteries for the droid x and cases that will fit the extended batteries?

Yeah, there's words..."Thorn in my side"...LOL.

I'll explain. I just got the extended battery (and the supplied cover) as offered on the Verizon website, I love the extra battery capacity. However, it has screwed up the use of my case & holster combo that I was really happy with. You MUST use the cover that comes with the extended battery because, as Wildman pointed out to me, using the regular cover (which will fit rather tightly) can be bad for the screen over time because of the pressure on the back from the standard cover.

So now, I've gone to using the fiber cover offered by Verizon and an extra-large pouch with a belt-clip, or I just put the phone in my pocket. But using the extended battery has been worth the extra trouble (see a recurring theme here?...:smileyhappy:)

After the 30 day grace period you usually can not return the device, the restock is for a user that chooses to exchange the device in the grace period time not after.

Gosh, I so totally forgot to mention that this return policy is during the first 30 days after the purchase. Oops. I was posting back and forth is several different forums last night.

My apologies,

The biggest thing that made more of a difference for me other than changing settings is downloading an App Killer program that will close the programs running in the back round on the phone.  I do more texting than talking and I don't spend hours on the interent so my phone will last for two days on a single charge.  Hope that helps.
