questions about my new DX

I just got my new DX today and it is my first smartphone! it came already loaded with 2.2 so iI hope I won't encounter the issues that I've read on here! I have 2 questions about the DX 1.) I have little black boxes with a check mark in them and was wondering what they meant? The online Moto user guide doesn't have that listed! 2.) What are task killers that I've heard about? Thank you in advance!

The checked black boxes are part of the notification bar. They indicate that an app has either installed successfully or has been updated successfully. Either way, this is a good thing.

A task-killer is a program that stops programs, processes, and apps that are running. At this point, I'm gonna say that you don't need to worry about task-killers at this time. However, that will probably start the whole boring discussion of "to task-kill or not to task-kill, that is the question" debate, so I'll end my participation on that topic now without further comment.

Enjoy the phone.

BTW, look in the Moto Droid X manual for information on the notification bar.

Online Manual can be downloaded here

It will bring up the pdf of the owners manual. Just click the save button and save it to your computer.

First thing.. Welcome to the world of Android SmartPhones :smileyhappy:, it is a nice place to be and I hope you enjoy your device, now it looks like gerio covered mostly everything you need to know for now, I agree the subject on a Task Killer can be a heavy subject to touch for now, it would probally be better for you to learn the device a bit before touching the subject of if task killers are needed or not because there is so many opinions that is can become a bit much.

One more thing, since your devce came preloaded with 2.2 I believe you souldnt run into the issues reported previously because the issue was mostly because of software and settings left over from the update process, your unit was probally preloaded from a service image that would most likely bypassed some of the items that would give you the reported issues.

Once again, Enjoy your device.

Although I downloaded the Droid X manual, and have played around with the Droid, one book, which I purchased at the Amazon site, has really given me a lot of good information that I didn't know nor was in the manual. The book is "Droid X for Dummies." I paid about $25 for it, but it's been worth every cent. It's not a perfect book, but has more than enough information in it to satisfy both novices and those who have had their Droid for a while now.
