"Return" key no longer shows up on Keyboard in text app.

This is really annoying.  While in the stock text messaging app on my Droid X, the keyboard no longer has the "return" key.  It has been replaced by a "smiley" key instead.  There is no way to do a carriage return, skip a line, etc. while in the text messaging app.  I have tried both the Swype keyboard and the Multi Touch keyboard, and they both have the problem.

The "return" key is there in all the other apps, and it used to be available in the text app prior to Froyo.  It is also there if I use other text apps (Handcent, Go SMS), which means it is only the combo of the stock messaging app, and Froyo that creates the problem.

What gives?  This is a major annoyance to me.  I don't care for the other messaging apps, I don't care about stupid "smileys", and if I did, I could input them manually.  What I DO care about is being able to skip a line, or drop down a line to start a new paragraph/thought, rather than being forced to run everything together.  Whose brilliant idea was this?

This is a standard setting to change to this to allow users to access the emotions option, this has been like this for some while because the text messages app only allows a number of letters and to add a line break will cause issue with the letter count...  At this time there isnt any way to modify it other than use a 3rd party keyboard but a number of them does this as well.

Another option that may work is open a email and type the message the way you want it to layout and then copy all text and paste in the text message window, it may keep the original format of the text but I havent tried it myself.

UPDATE:  Just tried it and you can copy and paste from email and text will keep format...

Dude, your texts are way too long.  Sorry, doesn't seem to be any solution other than what Wildman suggested, or download and use Handcent, it's a much better messaging app anyway, IMO.
