reboot Loop

My DINC gets stuck in a reboot loop where it reboots, loads everything (apps and widgets, etc), and after a minute it reboots again.

It Started when Verizon pushed that last update about 3 days ago (4.08.605.15 710RD).

Now every morning at exactly 2:00am is starts in a reboot loop. It wakes me up when it says "droid" and shoes the red eye animation.

I found out that if i remove the battery totally, and let it sit until morning (for me about 7:30am when i wake up) once I plug the battery back in, its fine for the whole day until 2am again.

I just need to get my phone to behave until i get my galaxy s3 - its pre-ordered

I didn't want to root, but maybe that is the best option at this point...

Is there away to rollback the last update?

Is anyone else having this problem.

Looks like something is optimizing the internal memory or SW is doing upgrade in background , I tried leaving it for 1 night and it never happened again.

For my friend it happened for 2 nights and then we both experienced it is behaving well. His memory was almost full and we noticed phone was bit faster than it usually was with older ROM before update.

I would advise to be patient and let him do that once without removing battery , you can put him in Vibrator or silent mode by Volume keys and leave it overnight , I beleive that will help you guys as well. Its my second day without any issue over night or day. I love this device.

YES!! It's happening to me too! I got the update on Tuesday evening. That night, and last night, at 2am it starting the boot loop and the loud "DROID" sound woke me up. I called Verizon this morning and they claim they haven't received any other complaints like this, and told me to put my phone in Safe Mode tonight to see if it happens again. Very annoying! I first thought it was my Backup Assistant triggering it, but that is set to backup in the afternoon, so I don't know what is so special about 2am. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

Please post if you find a solution to this.

I can't even boot into safe mode. I follow the instructions, and i get as far as when it says safe mode in the lower left corner of the slide down to unlock screen, then it immediately reboots. i can't unlock or leave it in safe mode.

I am having the same issue since 2am this morning. I called support and they're sending me out a new phone which won't arrive until Monday. I honestly don't understand why they don't have a fix for this as it seems it's happening to more than just me. I kept asking what the problem might be and kept getting told that all they could do is replace the phone...so frustrating as it reboots every 2 minutes and I'm not getting any sleep in the meantime!

I tried 2 things last night: I stopped the Backup Assistant from running, and I stopped all of the other accounts/services from syncing. It still rebooted at 1:50am. Then I pulled the battery to stop it. When I brought it back up, I put it in Safe Mode. At 2am it still rebooted.

Since it doesn't sound like Verizon is going to be much help, other than sending us another phone (which will probably do the same thing) or doing a master reset, maybe we all have something in common with our phones, and maybe we can figure out what the common demonator is in all of this.

I, myself, keep my Mobile Data turned off, and I use the Wi-Fi at my office and house. I only turn on Mobile if I'm out somewhere and need to get on the net. I also just downloaded the full version of Draw Something on Tuesday because it was on sale for .99. I also recently installed Voxer. That's all that I've done recently. Anyone else?

All my numbers are the same as yours are.

I always use my 3g, I almost never use WIFI when I'm at home.

I haven't installed any new apps since that update or even a few days before, and I turned off my back-up stuff and it still rebooted at 2am.

I have no idea what it could be. Maybe I'll try calling VZW again today.

My wife's Incredible started doing this right after the update as well. I have not called Verizon yet but it looks like I might have to. I have a hard time believing it is hardware related when multiple phones start having the same problem right after a software update. Not sure what the magic with 2:00 am is but it seems to start at around that time.

Try calling HTC support. I did this morning, and while he said that he has not had other reports of this happening, he did genuinely sound like he was going to try to look into it. If more of us call, the more they will realize it's a real issue.

I downloaded nothing but their "update" software which the Verizon customer service rep told me was "corrupted software" and that's why the phone needed to be replaced...nice update Verizon!

My phone is doing the same thing right after the update and starts right at 2 am and lasts for 2 hours... have nor called Verizon yet I'm about to reformat my phone and just skip installing the update until they fix it... I have Black Tie protection from Best Buy, should I have BB deal with it or Verizon???

Best Buy has some Good Customer Services But if you feel that since your Phone is a Branded Verizon Device give them a Call. Customer service No. 1-800-922-0204 Option 3 For Tech Services..

Thanks smartguy! I let it do it's thing last night, and I happened to wake up at 4am. I looked at it and it was turned on, so I swiped it, and it started rebooting again. I let it be, went back to sleep, and this morning its working fine. I didn't have to reset it or anything. I will see what it does tonight. So hoping I don't have to reset it.

I left my phone last night to do its thing, rebooting, i think it lasted about 3hrs, this morning it was on like normal, and has been behaving ever since, the true test will be tonight, but it seems like it worked.

Let it finish your update and mute your phone at night . It will finish its update over night nad you will get your phone ready to use in morning without any issues.

I'm still having a problem with mine. 2am Saturday, it did the reboot loop for several hours, but I let it be, and when I got up it was fine. I hoped that would be it. But Sunday morning, it did the boot loop at 2am, but kept doing it until 7 or so when I got up. I finally pulled the battery. Then this morning the same thing - I let it loop until 7:40am when I had to use the phone. The phone was getting hot anyways.

Any suggestions?

All I can tell you is you have been lucky it took this long for your phone to start this issue. Mine has been doing this since Feb. Mine started with the last firmware upgrade from Verizon, and from other post on different websites, that seems consistent. It will continue to get worse, and no one will have an option other get a new phone. My phone has gotten to the point it will start the rebooting loop at least 4 times a day, and ususally takes removing the battery and waiting 30 seconds for the 5th time before it will boot back to normal. If I open an app or try to use the net, it seems to overload it, and the cycle starts again. VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY frustrated, and I am not happy with the lack of response from Verizon.

What you are expierencing is normal with the most recent software. After the most recent update the Droid Incredible will also receive an additional Memory Optimization component to the MR5 update that will begin between 2am-5am (your local time). You must let this additional update complete or it will continue to happen each late night/early morning until it completes. I recommend putting your phone on charge and silent mode so that it doesnt wake you up because it will reboot serveral times.

MissLeah, But I have for 3 nights, left it alone and let it do its thing. The first night it seemed ok, it started at 2am and stopped before 6am. Then the next night it started at 2am and kept going until at least 7ish... and the screen kept saying No Service, then when I would just swipe to unlock the screen, it would reboot. I finally had enough and pulled the battery. Then last night it started at 2am and I let it run until 7:40am when I had to use it for work. And the battery was burning hot. How long are we supposed to let it run?

2:30am this morning!!!!!!!!!! it took me an hour and a half to figure out i had to take out my mini sd card to get it to stop! so far, so good. i guess i'll find out tonight if it's safe.

Mine and other people i know with DINC's only take a few minutes to update then our phones went back to normal.

I would definitely call Verizon or HTC and see what they can do for you.

Success. I removed the SD card, backed it up, and after reinserting it in the phone, formatted it. I then replaced only the essential stuff I wanted to keep like photos. This seems to have solved the problem - for now. Will see what happens tomorrow around 2AM... Thanks Xraybob.

This is not a problem , rather I will suggest mut e it over night and let him do his work over night.

Lot of people replied telling that it stopped after couple of nights once its done doing its upgrade in back ground.

It starts at 2 AM and then if we pull battery that kill the progress and it again starts next night to execute its command.

Leave it over night in no-tone / no volume state with charger connected , so that you wont be disturbed by Droid Sound and then you can have phone as it was in morning.

New Incredibles can be found online. I also bought one online for 200 bucks :smileyhappy: .Someone was selling a brand new device with sealed box :smileyhappy:

Same behavior here. Update came in yesterday AM, woke me up at 0230 this morning with repeated reboots accompanied by the infamous "Droid" voice. Finally got up after about three of them and shut it down.

Mine decided to do this tonight. Like others said, I have no problem previous to the update. I see an update and think I'm ok to do it because it's coming from Verizon. This may seem like a silly problem, but it's REALLY rubbing me the wrong way.
My fiancee is currently deployed and thankfully, he's finally about to leave. Short of sitting at my computer all day, starting at a screen, waiting for a message, I have no other way to contact him. Right now, I NEED to be in contact with him. I'm currently out of state and have to make a 22 hour drive before he gets home. So I really can't have my phone restarting or leave it turned off. If I get the message "see you in 2 days!" I have to get in my car and GO.

So aside from this being annoying and waking me up every 3 minutes, this is really inconvenient.

If this doesn't remedy itself FAST (like the "answer" said it does) and I get the run around like a lot of the other customers with this problem seem to have, my brother and I will be dropping our plan and getting a new service. I suggested my fiancee get Verizon once he returns home...may reconsider that too.

After futzing around with it...it's been good for about 10 minutes now, so fingers crossed.

My long winded story: This originally happened to me, probably after the previous update. My phone wouldn't even get to the unlock screen before it would reboot itself over and over, etc. Not knowing what to do, and having no other phone, I took it to Verizon and I think they reinstalled the software, but whatever they did it had the same effect in that I lost all of my Settings, Contacts, my Calendar events and my APPs.

Everything worked fine until last night at around 2am when the reboot started again after the new software update. This time, however, the reboot got all the way to the unlock screen and every time I unlocked the phone it would reboot. Finally I gave up and removed the battery. After a minute I reinserted the battery and after several iterations of this I plugged it in, put it on Mute and touched the power button to turn off the screen. It would not stay off so I gave up and went to sleep. This morning the dang thing was dead as a brick. It wouldn’t turn on and the LED next to the Verizon symbol was not lit. I tried playing with the charger and the USB cable. Nothing. I then plugged it into my computer and finally after repeatedly trying to power on it finally turned on and was operating normally. I hope I don’t have to go though this again but we will see.

Reboot Loop 7/01/2012:

2am exactly: Reboots started for the second time in two nights. After a little over one hour my "Incredible" phone had rebooted in excess of 15 times before I turned it face down so I could get some sleep. Thanks Verizon / htc. This morning my Droid is back to normal but there is another isssue. This is my only phone and if it is out of service for this long then if I should need the phone for an emergency (or for any reason at all for that matter) then I'm in trouble. I guess there's always Skype. It's a good thing it doesn't happen more often. In closing (for today), I think Verizon and/or htc should monitor these forums so they can be aware of customer problems.

Same problem here, but mine was at 5am! I am on the east coast, so maybe that's why the time is different than others? I am also having a problem sending and receiving texts with pictures attached since the update. Before the new update, the only problem I was having was the low application data storage issue. I'm tired of resetting my phone back to factory settings! I wish someone would get this mess straightened out!!

second phone. Verizon finally swapped it out and we're not having

anymore problems.

Reboots seem to have stopped after three or four days of it. on both phones.

I really think this bad version of code is on purpose to force us off of the unlimited data plan and help fund the 4G new infrastructure. This is all too coincidental.

My phone went to stuck reboot sequence a week ago in the middle of the night so I pulled the battery. In the morning is was OK. On the way back from the airport on Thursday it went black and the lights on the bottom of the touch screen were on. I removed the battery and then it would not boot completely and was stuck in a reboot cycle. I took it to the Verizon store and he gave a fluffy crap answer and just said it was dead. I found out that Verizon is on a big push to get folks off of the unlimited data plans (which I happen to have or did until I fell for the ploy). While the sales guy had me all ready to buy the new upgraded phone I was able to get into the boot screen and erase the cache and it booted again.

I'm having the same issue. I'm on night number 1 after the upgrade was pushed yesterday. I've muted the phone and am waiting to see about the 6am "window".

I already wiped the cache and that did not help. I have not tried formatting the sd card, that will be next if this continues.

4G or not I hope this is just a bad piece of software an we can expect an update soon.

The same suspicions came to mind after this started on my android.....immediately aftter the software "upgrade". A week or so ago, Verizon left a message on my answering machine trying to get me to buy a new phone ( I guess it's been 2 years). I just ignore those; I'll replace my phone if/when I'm ready, and see no reason to yet. This Incredible has been the best cell I've ever had, and I like my plan as is. I've heard that Verizon was doing away with the unlimited data plan (which I'm grandfathered into), and suddenly my phone has been hijacked (rendering it basically unusable) by their software? I think it was done purposely. It's not paranoia if they really ARE out to get you. If my phone remains in this state, I'm switching companies.

You can go in settings , applications - Select All- Press Menu ( from 4 soft keys ) and sort by size .

After doing above , go to all 3rd party apps which are having big sizes like facebook , maps etc.

click on each application and under that press Clear cache.

This will help to get rid of a huge amount of junk cache sitting and eating your internal memory.

FYI on my 2am reboot: I was in the settings on my phone when 2am came around and it didn't reboot.

After I went back to normal mode it started to reboot at 2:25am. This is the 3rd morning in a row.

Curious why the top of this thread says the question has been answered. I just went through the entire thread and I did really see an answer other than be patient and hope this ridiculous restarting loop eventually stops? My latest system update installed on Saturday and for the past 2 nights I've been woken up by the annoying "Droid" sound coming from my phone at 2:30am. I did not remove the battery, instead just muting it and turning it face down so I could actually sleep. So if what I'm reading is correct, this rebooting will end eventually? My phone is the only way for my family to reach me and it also happens to be my alarm clock, so putting it on mute is not going to work long term.

I've always been a Verizon and HTC fan, but their lack of acknowledgement when there is an obvious problem, is starting to make me waver in my loyalty.

My Droid is doing the same thing, every morning at 2/2:30 am. It's only been the past 3 days since the system update. Sending out a new phone isn't the answer, it's clearly software related. Does that mean I should be complaining on the HTC board instead? Is anyone going to fix the problem or do I just have to turn off my phone every night and hope that no one tries to call with an emergency?

I suggest you avoid this update, as this is all it does:

• Bug Causes phone to continuously reboot from 2:00 AM to 6;00 AM everyday

• Record and send a Visual Voice Mail to up to 10 recipients while seeing all parties in a list.
• Improvements made in Bluetooth® Car connectivity for certain cars.
• Resolved issue where purchased Verizon App ringtones could not be saved to the device.

Hey Firefly -

No , there is no way to uninstall an update for any Android device once user installs the SW. This is Google design unfortunately.

You can Master Reset to take to factory state if that helps, but that will also take you to latest SW you downloaded on device not the one you got device with .

For lot of users I have read that this issue didnt happened or happened for one night and ended . This is not a bug , but depends on device and what applications users have installed on their devices which might be conflicting with phone functioning.

Some are seeing BT fixes really helpful and also have not seen 2 Am reboot after 2 nights .

You can surely turn your device mute when you sleep and wake it up when you wake up . :smileyhappy:

Clear internal memory or cache of apps from settings- applications - all applications and clear for most used apps like Facebook which might about 25-30 MB of cache memory and making your device sluggish

This is not a bug? Are you freaking kidding me. I am a software tester and this sure would constitute a bug for us. It's been 2 nights for me and as I said in another post I was using the alarm to know when to feed my newborn. I slept though the 3am feeding on Sat night because of the rebooting.

So what happens if it continues tonight do I just keep turning it off and render my phone inoperable for 6 hours. If so I should get a 25% credit on my bill since Verizon has made my phone a brink for 25% of the time.

This is not an acceptable answer Smartguy.

Turning my phone off every night is NOT an option. I also was told that since my phone is out of warranty, my only option was to buy a new phone. That is unacceptable. My phone worked just fine until I had a software update forced on me. I paid way too much phone for this phone and for service each month for Verizon and HTC to sit on their hands and do nothing. I'll keep calling until I get an acceptable answer or I'll take my business elsewhere.

I don't believe my phone has rebooted at 2am in the past 2 nights. The only thing I did different was manually go through my apps and clear the cache (Facebook was huge). Keep in mind, I had previously cleared the system cache a few days before this, but the rebooting kept up every night. So for now, I think my phone may be okay, but we will see what this week brings.

Also, in answer to someone else's question - I have no problem sending picture text messages.

I really feel that this "update" was just to irritate all of us so much, that we would upgrade to another phone. I can't believe a software company would put this bad of an update out by accident.

My husband and I are both experiencing this 2 AM - 4 AM conundrum with our DINC. A few days ago we were asked to "update" and ever since that "update" our phones are singing "droid" by our nightstands. What is it and how can we get it to stop? And why 2 AM?

The Verizon folks did a hard reset of my phone and that cleared the issue. Remove your SD card before hand and perform a backup of your contacts and all should be good.

It seems as though the problem for everyone only happens between 2am and 6am. The only solution I have found is to trick the phone into thinking it isn't 2-6am. Settings--> Date & Time. Uncheck 'Automatic' and change it to 2pm or whatever suits you. The rebooting stopped immediately for me. It isn't a permanent fix but it is better than nothing for now.

This is an obvious Verizon/HTC software error and Verizon is doing themselves no favors to keep denying it. I received the mandatory update on Tuesday and since then the phone reboots in a loop every night at 2:00 AM. Time for Verizon to step up and solve this with a correction update.

Watch this be deleted for being out of terms of service....asking Verizon to do the right thing.

So like Monday Night...I believe I set off the reboot loop. 430ish AM Central I woke up and checked my phone...it had not rebooted, but than started. So this is twice now, me checking my phone after 2am when it had not auto rebooted that it started rebooting. Maybe this can help the engineers that work with this stuff figure something out.

It's an HTC thing, and it's easily dealt with. SmartGuy did have the right answer (scan down to see HTC's explanation). I'm a regular person with a minimum of computer expertise.

It took two nights and a total of about 6 hours for my phone to finish whatever the reboot cycle was trying to do. During the day, while I was at work, I advanced my phone to the next day, set the time to 2 am, muted the phone (by using the volume rocker on the left side), and let the reboot cycle do its thing. I did leave WiFi on, but I don't think that's necessary (as my phone started the reboot cycle when WiFi and internet were off). I also turned on Background data (in the Accounts and Sync menu) which I used to tell when the reboot cycle stopped: with Background and WiFi on, the phone will tell me if I have App updates available. I'd clear that notification as soon as I'd see it; each time the phone rebooted, that update notification would reappear

The first cycle lasted about 3 hrs, and the reboot cycle stopped. I then corrected the phone time/date to the present, and was not woken up in the wee hours of the morning. The following day, I advanced the date and time, muted the phone, and let the reboot cycle happen. It lasted about two hours. Immediately after that cycle finished, I advanced the phone date/time one more day (so the phone would think it was 24 hrs later) and the reboot cycle did not happen.

The early morning reboot is the second part of the update. It should happen from 2am-5am. It is a memory optimization update being performed after the first part of the update. This should only happen once, although if you interrupt it through the night it will start over again the next night until it completes successfully. Once finished it will not happen again.

It's not being interrupted and it has done it every single day for a WEEK like this. So please don't tell me the answer is to let it go, because I have done that already. 1 night at the beginning I took out the battery but the other 6 days it's gone all the way through it's "memory optimization" or whatever you want to label it.

My phone hasn't rebooted itself for 3 nights now, so hopefully it's finished. But what I have an issue with is 1) HTC / Verizon's lack of warning, and 2) them pretty much telling us that if our phone can't be fixed then we are the ones stuck with buying a new phone.

1) I called the 2nd morning that the phone woke me up, and neither Verizon or HTC had any explanation. If they knew about the 2am reboot loop, why not tell us ahead of time, or say "oh yeah, that's the update causing that - don't take out your battery and let it run"? A simple text or email ahead of time would have saved many sleepless nights and aggravation...so that leads me to believe its a bad update - in all of the updates that my phone received before this one, none of them required the 2am reboot. Why this one? If they knew beforehand that it would cause the middle of the night cycling, why didn't the techs know about it when I called, or at least give us a warning before it happened?

2) And why, if my phone was working fine before this update, but is messed up now, why should I be stuck with buying a new phone with my money? And why should my phone be rendered useless for several hours at a time, and us not be compensated for that time?

I've had the reboot loops at 2am going on for a week now. Last night I forgot to leave it connected to the charge cable and this morning I found it dead. I needed to remove/insert the battery to be able to take a charge and turn on. So I did and it's been rebooting for the last 3 hours.

I have had this problem as well since last Saturday. Letting the phone cycle every night for 5 nights did not fix the problem in my case.

Yesterday, I called Verizon and HTC tech support. HTC said the problem was probably caused by a conflict with some app on the phone that prevents the update from successfully completing. The only real solution they offered was a factory reset.

Before trying the reset, I was able to fix the problem on my own in about 15 minutes:

(1) In settings, I manually set the date and time to tomorrow morning at 1:59am. At 2:01am, the handset rebooted. I repeated this several times to make sure I could reproduce the problem.

(2) Next, I deleted a few applications and reset the phone to 1:59am to see if this eliminated the conflict. My plan was to start with apps that are either unstable or that monitor other apps. This approach succeeded with the first group of apps deleted: Advanced Task Killer, Fidelio, and Lookout.

(3) After verifying the problem was gone last night, I reinstalled the three apps above and verified that the problem did not return.

Now that you mention it, I uninstalled Lookout as well, and sometime after that is when the rebooting stopped. I didn't have Advanced Task Killer or Fidelio. So maybe Lookout was the problem.

Mine was rebooting for about 10 days or so at 2am, then this past weekend it stopped. I can't remember exactly when I uninstalled Lookout, but I'm betting it was the problem. Previous to this, I had tried putting it in Safe Mode, deleting my system cache, and neither of those stopped the problem. I did manually clear out the cache of some apps, so maybe a combination of this and removing Lookout helped the problem.

Get rid of the Task Killer that Will help you allot. Instead Use System Panel App it Will give you the Vitals of your Inc. and it Will work allot better than a what your Using. I used that on my Inc. For 2 year till i sold my Incredible Now i have it on my Razr Maxx.. it's a Good App Look for it in the Play-Store..b33 :smileyhappy:

Mine won't even allow me to shut it down. It goes partially off and gets stuck.

I've experienced the same thing -- if I touch the phone to check the time and it is after 2am it sets off the rebooting nonsense. This is ridiculous, they need to fix the problem.
