What type of phone is it? I have had 3 smartphones that would do this. To stop it, task manager is used to regularly to clean my memory and open applications. Smartphones are wonderful, but all of the programs that we use do not close themselves like we'd think. We need to close them manually like on a computer.

task managers should not be used to manage runing apps, this is a bad thing
it sounds like there is a bad app though
i would get android system info, and see whats using processor, then go from there

Task managers are a no-no. They're completely unneeded.
As for lagging, widgets can be really bad about this. Try deleting those

Using live wallpapers from third parties like Beautiful Widgets will cause a slowdown. I had this problem and discovered it was linked to setting up a pop email account. Don't understand why, but after resetting the phone and then setting the account up again the slowness returned. I then deleted it and set the account up as an imap account and haven't had any problems since. Do a Google search and you'll find other posts on this issue.

Yep, POP email in the Mail app causes it to crawl. You can either try what the previous poster suggested, or use another mail app from the Market.
