what advantages should I be seeing with gingerbread? I see the new keyboard but I use swiftkey, I don't see much UI change...

From what I can tell, I think the changes are slight. This is what I see so far:
- new "downloads" app
- new "running" tab under manage applications
- some menus etc.. seem smaller
- options on menu when you power down are different (new restart option)

Mostly all changes is behind the scene to optimize proformance..

Additional changes I saw in Gingerbread:
1 SIP (Internet calling) Account support. Settings > Call > Internet Calling
I tried putting in a free SIP account from a 3rd party VoIP provider and it didn't work.
2 In Update 4.06.605.2 and 4.06.605.3 there was a Bluetooth Internetnet Sharing Toggle added:
Settings > Wireless Networks > Connection Type (for Internet Sharing Mode) USB/Bluetooth
I tried it with the Blutoooth radio on my laptop and 3 others, and never could get it to work, getting Error 692 Modem errors.
With the 4.08.605.2 (current) update, that option has been removed.
