text message notification

When my my phone receives a text message it will not play a notification sound (factory or from a soundboard) even with the sound turned up to full volume, but when i receive an email it rings everytime without skipping a beat. Any clue as to why this is?

Have you checked the settings in the text messaging app and verified you haven't unchecked the notifications or set the tone for silent?

I'm sorry i may sound like idiot but i have checked these settings several times in the sound settings, but i didnt know there was a text message app. Sorry.  Is it something downloaded or am in the right area in the settings.

There are settings within the text messages that can override the settings you have set up for the phone.

Main settings:
Home screen > press menu button > settings > sound & display

Text messages:
Open your text message icon > press menu > press settings or more >if you had to press more in the step before, now press settings.
