Thank you to the community for all the attempts to explain how to have separate tones for text messages from different contacts. Our community member vereyezuhn did provide the correct answer. Since the DROID X does not have an embedded option to have specific text alerts for different contacts, a third-party app is required. I apologize as we cannot suggest a specific application as it would not be supported by Verizon Wireless.

Hope this helps!

You'll have to download a 3rd party texting app such as Handcent

vereyezuhn suggestion seems to be the only workable way to do this as far as I seen.

Hello,

In order to change the tone for your messages, please follow the steps outlined below:

From the home screen, press Menu.

Next, touch Sound

Then, touch Notification ringtone and choose the sound you wish to hear when new text or MMS messages are received.

For another useful tool for your device, please visit the link outlined below:

Droid X Simulator

Thank you.

Kelly,  I think the OP wanted different tones for different senders of text messages....  I assumes so he/she could tell who the sender was by what notification tone was heard.

Different Ringtones for different Text messages.

You may have already figured it out since I see you posted it last month - but just in case.

1.  Go to desktop and pick Contacts

2.  Scroll up/down to desired contact

3.  left push button gets you to Edit

4.  go down to bottom to Additional Info

5.  Scroll down to an item that says Ringtone and most likely says 'No Ringtone Specified'

6.  Press on it and pick a ringtone that satisfies you.

7.  OK

8.  Save

Those are directions to get specific ringtones for each contact. The OP wanted specific text tones.

Have you tried going into the app drawer - MESSAGING / Messaging Settings / / Text Messaging / Notifications ?

I have UNCHECKED all boxes on the "messages" app from the All Apps section, but I still get both notifications.

If you're going to use Handcent exclusively, you have to disable everything on the stock text messaging app. Go into your apps and find the "Text Messaging" one, then hit Menu button, Settings, and literally uncheck or disable EVERYTHING - notifications, led light, sounds, etc. The two apps conflict with eachother when both settings are on.

Been there, done that. Everything is Un-checked. on the "messages" app I found in the All Apps section. Could it be I have a 3rd text messaging program? How can I tell?
