Search ringtones in the market. There are lots of apps that are basically databases of ringtones/notification tones. Just be sure to read some of the comments and check the rating first.

Go to Settings/Sound/Notification ringtone and change to any of the listed sounds.. If you want to add personal alerts copy audio file to SD/Media/Audio/Notifications and you can then select that ringer from notification list.  Sometime you have to reboot vefore it shows in list.

If this doesnt work just download Ringo Lite from market and this will allow you to change a personal alert.

Although, that will be your general notification ringtone. If you want a ringtone specifically for texts, you will need to install a third-party app. I use handcent and I've heard that chompSMS is a good one as well. I don't know about chomp, but with handcent you can even assign separate texttones for different contacts.

Your suggestiong will work also but I have placed files there but I just realized I usually use a mid file so that will work but not in this case, so Ringo Lite is still a good option, I use the full version but the Lite version should work under this situation.

Free app RingDroid will let you load and edit (for length) MP3 files and save them as any of the sound types Droid X supports (ringtone, notification, alarm, etc). It's in the market.

I use it all the time to make my own custom tones.

Best,

If you make a folder on your SD card and name it media and inside of that folder you can make three files...one called "ringtones" one called "notifications" and one called "alarms" then drop the according MP3 files you want to use in there respective folders..Then they will show up in your stock list of ringtones and notifications
