Try uninstalling the market updates and reupdate the market.
If that doesn't work try uninstalling the app that is having problems then reinstalling it.

I don't know what the actual problem is, but I have diagnosed it somewhat. The apps that will not update have all been moved to the SD card on my phone. If I move the app back to the phone, it updates flawlessly and can then be moved back to the SD card. This is a pain in the rear of course, but it worked for me this time. I had about 10 apps that I had to update this way. It doesn't matter, it seems, whether I use the Market or AppBrain to install. Don't know enough technically about the phone/SD card interface to truly figure out the problem. Maybe someone on here can help us out with the info I provided. I really don't want to factory reset the phone, especially since I don't know if that will correct the problem.

After many evening attempts that went nowhere. Next morning things all came down no problem? Is this a satellite issue perhaps? Although now I keep getting sign in errors for gmail. Are these related? Thanks one and all

This is becoming a common problem and the apps installed to sd card is becoming the regular issue.
I have to ask, the Droid X has more than enough storage internal, why do you have the apps installed to the ED Card? I have over 30 large apps installed and I still have almost 5GiG of internal app storage, there really isnt any reason to save them on the SD Card and this causes issues also because when sd card is mounted you can not use those apps...

Thank you for your feedback. After trying the suggestions provided earlier by others, if the device is still having trouble updating your apps, perhaps a factory reset can resolve the concerns. Please ensure you save your data on a Memory SD card or syncing it with your computer before doing the factory reset. Nothing on your memory card would not be deleted with this reset. The steps are provided below. After the reset, try re installing the apps from scratch so it does not duplicate any earlier updating issues.
To reset your phone to factory settings and erase all the data on your phone, press Menu > Settings> Privacy > Factory data reset > Reset phone. For a reference simulator , please use this link: http://support.vzw.com/swf/droid_x/simulator.html
