upgraded droid x - now regret it

Hey all:

I upgraded my droid x yesterday.  Everything on it has changed now and I'm rather upset.

1.  The background - not the wallpaper is now black.  It used to be white and I could see it better.

2.  The texting has changed, i.e., the color of the text boxes, the ability to add another person sending the text to, the keyboard

3.  The icons at the bottom of the pages are different and lead to the same but different pages

4.  Some of the my app icons have changed and are unable to be manipulated to the way I had them before and some don't work.

This is overall very disappointing.  I don't feel I am able to use it adequately because I can't figure out how to make it what I had and what I want.

So my question then is, is there a way to get it back to where it was?  I don't like the new upgrade, don't know what it was supposed to accomplish, won't do it again but I liked where the phone was and just want it back.

Sounds babyish but I don't have the time during my day to sit there and fiddle with a phone that I don't like just because the people that upgraded think it's what I want.

I would appreciate some guidance.

Thank you.

Welcome to Gingerbread, and the forum ..  :smileyhappy:

You're seeing the changes that were introduced in GB and no, you cannot go "back" to FROYO ... at least in any official method that doesn't violate TOS with Verizon.

As far as the Screen appearance -  you CAN try a 3rd party APP like ADW or Launcher Prop to more customize/tailor your screen experieince ... but things like the Task Bar colors and underlying subscreens being White cannot be changed.  You'll get used to it ...  Change is sometimes difficult for people to accept ...

if you have specific "problems", feel free to SEARCH the forum or post your issue ... most all issues or problems have already been posted & discussed .... since GB has been out for 4 months.  Good luck.

It appears that GB wasn't actually PUSHED to everyone ... Actually, it was received on May 23rd to the SOAK group and started rolling around June 1st.  For whatever reason, it seems like more people are just this week getting it pushed to them. Strange.

I am extremely upset with the unasked for and unwanted changes. I especially resent the condescending attitude that "change is difficult". I don't appreciate that the product I purchased is no longer the product I own. I was perfectly happy with the froyo operation. My phone no longer works properly, lacks some of the functions it previously had, randomly reboots and randomly deactivates the SD card since the update. I had seriously considered letting my contact run out before I bought this phone which I had researched thorougly to get the functionality I wanted. If your idea of customer service is telling the customer what they need and belittling their concerns then you will lose my business permanently.

Wow....... I wonder if you get this upset with Microsoft when they make changes to Windows, Office and other programs that they do.

The comment by another poster "Change is difficult" while you think that it is condensending, it is true.

Your frustration in the changes is warranted, the problems that you are have are real. No one is disputing that fact. The unmounting of the SD card is one that I have not heard before. The random reboots can happen, I do get that once in a while myself. It happens when a program starts to eat up memory, and the OS has no choice but to reboot to reclaim memory. Sometimes it does it at the wrong time for you, but it happens. I was not real happy with the color changes either, because I like dark background with white lettering. Now a lot of them are white background with black lettering, but I have gotten used to it.

Most of the people that post here are not employees. Employees of Verizon are clearly marked to identify them. I have not seen one employee on this board be condensending/belitelling anyone with problems.

Have you performed a factory reset to try to resolve some of the problems since the update? You might think that it is not needed, or should not have to be done, but sometimes the update doesn't totally replace certain files, and a factory reset will get that done. Some of the reboot problems could be a problem with an app you downloaded and installed. I have to replace some apps because they caused problems after the update, and the developer would not beleive that their app would cause a problem. But some problems were gone after I uninstalled their app. It happens.

I hope that you get your problems resolved.

Have a nice day

Microsoft doesn`t cram an update down your throat. You have to choose to accept it. Also its not necessary to completely wipe out your pc or laptop due to installing an update. So many times all i hear is that it`s an app thats not playing nicely with the gingerbread update. That`s **bleep**. There are many phones running gingerbread and the same apps you say don`t work on this particuliar phone work just fine on like say the bionic. It`s just motorola`s twist of their version of gingerbread. For the record microsoft will tell you to simply restart your pc in order to finish installing an update due to do some files being in use.

Unfortunately for some newer owners of this phone their primarily getting answers from some of us who have had this phone since release day which was well over a year ago and have become accustomed to it`s quirks. It`s a kind of been there done that kinda attitude. This forum is not the only place you can go to get answers. Trust me... i know. But we are limited as to how much info and suggestions that can be provided due to the TOS of this forum. If your truly unhappy with your phone then sell it on ebay or craigslist or something like that then buy some other model used and try to be happy with that.

Here's some insight for you... We are talking about a phone which is DIFFERENT than a computer.  A computer has ENOUGH space for legacy support(The reason why the OS is 15GB).  If MS got rid of that legacy support then windows would be more than 1/2 its size.  Android which uses a modified Linux kernel and no legacy support requires more work to ensure it works on devices.  It's not Motorola's twisted version of gingerbread...  A bionic which uses a different DRIVERS, and a different kernel which causes the problem.  The Droid X just got new drivers and kernel which now certain apps may not work due to the way they have their coding.  Manufacturers can't account for every app in the market will work due to some asinine way of coding a lot of devs use.  The developer has to update their apps and to unsure it works on different devices.  This is time consuming and one of the reasons why good developers stick to iOS or WP7(in the near future more than likely) over Android. I can show you apps that are so poorly coded it'll work on Any non updated OS, but not when the OS is updated with new drivers and kernels.  I have sent the developer coding types to ensure better upgradability and flexibility, but the dev doesn't even support his apps anymore.

FYI you were never forced to update the OS...  There ALWAYS two buttons to update.  Do it later or do it now.  Windows does install things without your consent...  Any that is deemed critical will always install and on your next restart it'll complete the process without you knowing.  Should be sniffing your network sometimes :smileyhappy:

Welcome to Android and Open Source.  It  will not be nearly as polished as a closed system.  I am very used to as I have been around the block in the Open Source world.  One thing people need to understand about open source.  No matter what Android device you have there will be quirks.  I have owned them all from G1 to Droid 3 and whatever inbetween.

that do it later is sometimes as little as 12 hours

it gets so annoying you eventually give in

this happened with my wifes droid 2 and gingerbread, she didnt need it, didnt want to change anything

but just got tired of putting it off

Actually your wrong. Microsoft requires you to update your software, by no longer supporting older Windows.... no security updates, no paid support no nothing. If you use the default setup for Windows update, Updates are installed automatically without you knowing they are installed. The only way you would know is if Windows notified you to restart your computer.

Well, lets see. I have had 3 different apps cause random restarts, one of them when I was trying to use my phone. Removed the apps, and the random restarts stopped. Right now, I get a random restart once in a while. I have not tracked down that one yet because it happens so infrequently, I have a hard time figuring out which app is causing it. So for you to say that apps never cause problems, is just as bad as me saying that only apps cause problems. My expirience is different than yours.

For the record microsoft will tell you to simply restart your pc in order to finish installing an update due to do some files being in use.

Android OS does the same thing. It restarts before installing the update. Sometimes the update does not complete correctly which a factory reset will correct most of the time.

Unfortunately for some newer owners of this phone their primarily getting answers from some of us who have had this phone since release day which was well over a year ago and have become accustomed to it`s quirks. It`s a kind of been there done that kinda attitude.

Actually your wrong again. At least in my case, I have not had hardly any problems with my X or any of the updates provided. I did a factory reset when we got Froyo because it was recommended. I did have some problems with Gingerbread because I installed a leaked version. I had to do the real nasty to get it back to a point to get the real Gingerbread update. But that problem was my own creation. It caused all sorts of problems with apps that I have not had a problem with the real update.

I totally agree. There are many other places to look for help, and just like here, take what is said with a little common sense.

Bottom line.... we both have had different expiriences with our phones.

Are you the OP on a different login name? I can never tell.

If you're not the OP, completely ignore this post (google Froyo Droid X and you'll find that there is a solution for the new software... I won't say anymore as it's a violation of this forum, but... *cough cough*)

Anyway. If you ARE the OP - we gave you suggestions for nearly every issue you listed - did you even TRY them? They fix/take care of most of your complaints.

VZW is allowed to update your phone as they see fit to work with their network, otherwise your phone may not work. When you purchase a phone from a cell carrier provider, it is yours yes, but there are also reasons why the carrier is going to update the phone....so that it won't go nuts with their network. Yeah I liked Froyo on my DX but at the same time any updates that VZW makes to their network will not always work with Froyo. Its just like if you were to go and buy an old Moto StarTAC phone...it won't work on today's cellular network. You can't expect to use Windows 3.1 on todays computers or with today's networks and everything be ok. They don't upgrade the OS just for the heck of it....they do it as part of maintenance on the overall network...yeah Moto and VZW haven't done a very good job with GB on the DX, but you need to understand how things work below the surface before expecting everything to stay one way so it doesn't bother you. No one forces you to use the DX or Verizon...its a choice that YOU made on your own....so you can always leave when playing in the sandbox gets to be too frustrating for you

3.  The icons at the bottom of the pages are different and lead to the same but different pages You can change the first 3 icons on the dock to anything you wish. Just long press.

4.  Some of the my app icons have changed and are unable to be manipulated to the way I had them before and some don't work. Hmm.. Not sure I experienced this issue. Which apps' icons have changed? As another person said, home replacement apps like ADW.Launcher allow you to customize the look, and the app icons.

For a lark, I downloaded Launcher Pro a while back to see just what it was. I love it. There are several things I can do with the Launcher Pro that I was unable to do with the stock launcher. I got the free version (being a cheap person) and the one big difference between the free and the cost one is that I can not resize the icons. No biggy since I do not usually do that anyway. I also download the GO launcher which is also really great. The one thing I liked about this one is that you can have more than seven pages. I played with up to nine. However, I don't have that many icons, and having one or two per page was sort of rediculous. Try one of these, or both, to see if you like them better than the stock pages.

I have a feeling that Verizon stopped pushing GB a while back until they rolled the .605 update into it because of the keyboard problems. That would explain the sudden influx of people just getting GB recently.

I have no inside information on the matter, but with what has happened over the past week, I do beleive it to be true.

I`d like to believe that there is going to be another update but I`m not going to hold my breath. I lurk on many forums and I have seen the numerous complaints from users that have issues with one update to the next. Unfortunately it seems as though every update brings with it new issues and that's why I`m still on moto`s 2.2.1 build. The camera settings was the most important feature I didn`t want to lose. If were lucky we may see ics but doubtful.

This thread should get the BOTB nod and be required reading for anyone buying an Android phone. Keiffers and Tidbits comments especially.
