why have some retailers slashed Droid Charge down to $89.99? is it being discontinued?

I will not name this online retailer, because I'm not here to provide free advertising for them.

However, I will say that they are one of the top 5 internet merchants in the country. Two

others have priced the Charge at $119 and $139. Still much cheaper than the $299 price

tag on VZW's own website. :smileysad:

If it is being discontinued, what is its replacement supposed to be?

They invoke their own TaC(Terms and Conditions) to further subsidize their devices. They make commission off the phones and the 2 year your sign. So if you ever cancel within their TaC you will often pay upwards of $250+ as well as VZW ETF.

That's the biggest difference, and make sure you pay attention to what you are agreeing with. I seen some people get really shafted by them.

Wirefly has it for $69.99 for a new account contract or 119.99 for renewing which is great BUT the big BUT is that you got to always read the reviews and there are many negative reviews on that merchant. Amazon is 119.99 for renewal and should be good. In fact, someone down below went to their local best buy and they price matched it from Amazon! Check reviews on the other merchants. I think they are lowering prices because it's not selling all that great, and they will probably be making room soon for the Samsung Galaxy 2 dual core.

My sense of what is happening is that that the retailers have realized that interest in the Charge has dropped (probably based on week-to-week unit sales, which they track very closely), and they are re-pricing to get rid of remaining stock. While it does not mean that the Charge is at EOL, it probably means the initial hype by VZW is no longer pushing customers to purchase the Charge.

Further to my last post, here is an interesting NY Times article on the pace of innovation in phones and tablets, and what it means for support of existing products. While the article does not mention the Charge, it generally confirms that tech companies in this space are accelerating development of new products and shortening the lives of existing ones.

That means the cost of a two-year VZW contract to get a subsidy for your phone price is becoming higher in real terms; you will spend more of that two years with a device that is no longer the hot thing.
