Old GTE Utility box removal

I have an old GTE utility box in front yard - cable is barely under soil and I don't want to cut through accidentally as I work in that area of yard. How do I get the box and cable removed?

Thank you,

Anne S.

If you're a Verizon customer, just call Verizon's tech support and let them know the cable is working itself out of the ground. They may be able to re-anchor the cable and box. If you're not a VZ Customer, a VZ Rep may stop by this forum post to help, or I recommend trying to reach out to Verizon through X/Twitter or Facebook.

For the boxes, since you mention GTE, it's probably for POTS Telephone. Those boxes typically hold the inter-connection points from the phone network to houses, and may also serve as splice points. Those can't be submerged into the ground nicely, since ground water often seeps into the pedestals and floods out the connections. In big cities with submerged utilities, the vaults and cables are air pressurized to keep water out. Water can impact network connectivity for other customers on that line.  For Fiber networks, it's a different story, since Fiber optic cables don't conduct electricity and use weatherproofed plugs to keep the ports free of dirt and water.

We are not current Verizon customers however we do have Verizon Fios installed. Do we still need the old green boxes  for any purpose since there is no more POTS phone line? I see that the orange "PVC" for the FIOS runs from sidewalk and goes past the old Green GTE box and cable. Would really like old boxes removed completely if it serves no purpose.
Thanks,

If you are not a current Fios user, but the hardware is present, call Verizon Repair.

Say the word "Pole" to bypass all of the other questions and be transferred to an agent. Explain the situation to the agent and go from there.

The other option would be to call Verizon Sales, explain the situation and have the agent transfer you to repair.

Last option, sign up for Fios service.  🙂

Have just discovered that since I am in California, the equipment no longer belongs to Verizon as it was sold to Frontier in 2009. Have to try a different phone tree.

Thanks for trying to assist.
