Fios 1 STB not responding to Alexa after completing skill setup

Question

There are instructions on how to install the Fios Alexa skill and control a Fios 1  STB using an Amazon Echo device. I followed the instructions, the skill connected to my one and only STB.

Now when I say "Alexa, tune to NBC",  Alexa responds "Tuning to NBC on Fios, now airing Dateline." Sounds great, right? But nothing changes on my TV or STB. Nothing.

I can use the real remote, and the remote in the Fios TV  App on my phone works too.

Does anyone recognize this problem?

Is it possible that I have to open ports through my router to allow the Alexa cloud to reach my STB? It wasn't in the instructions anywhere.  I'm not using Verizon's router, is it possible their already box has the required port open?

First thing I'd try is powerecycling (unplugging power to) both the router and the Fios box in that order. could just be a glitch there. If that doesn't help, try uninstalling and re-installing the skill.
