Pixel 3 hotspot "authentication failed"

When I attempt to activate a wi-fi hostpot on my pixel 3 I get an error "Authentication Failed. Please try again later".
I talked to support today and they told me everything is fine with my account but that hotspots do not work with unlocked phones. They claim you can only set up a hotspot with a phone purchased from Verizon. I have not seen anything like this on the Verizon we site and it is very disappointing that they have promotions to try to get you to bring your own device to the Verizon network and then do not support those devices.
Has anyone managed to get hotspot to work with an unlocked device?

I can understand why you would be confused about the issues with using Mobile Hotspot on that unlocked Google Pixel 3, tx12345. The last thing we would want is for you to be disappointed. I'm happy to shed some light. To clarify, while unlocked devices purchased outside of Verizon may work with the Verizon network, those devices are certified only for basic network interoperability. Only phones sold directly from Verizon are guaranteed to work with all supported Verizon features, Verizon apps, branding elements and more. To clarify, is this how you attempted to activate Mobile Hotspot?: http://spr.ly/6600ExDNq Your plan would also need to support Mobile Hotspot. Here's more about Mobile Hotspot: http://spr.ly/6601ExDNS What plan do you have?

I have the Go Unlimited plan and the Verizon rep I talked to confirmed that everything is fine with my plan for me to set up a mobile hot spot.
I did use the procedures that you provided. When I tap the button to turn the hotspot on it gives the error message "Authentication failed. Please try again later" and immediately goes back to off.

I can see in my phone logs that when I attempt to turn on the hotspot setting the verizon network is replying with a status -4.

So unprofessional.
It's costing me time and money.
I can see the class action caming later on.
Go to work and get it fix now!!!

Verizon is giving us all the run around. I had an original Pixel for 3 years and it worked perfectly. Upgrade to Pixel 3 last month and hotspot "authentication failed." After 1 hour on the phone and 3 hours in 3 different Verizon stores, they finally gave me a new phone. Guess what? Same problem!!
Meanwhile, I have to start over with transferring all data with a new phone when the Verizon reps probably already knew it was a network issue and won't be straight with us.
Verizon is seriously blowing it with this problem.

Hello,
Just wanted to chime in and join the ranks. My recently aqcuired work phone (Pixel 3) on Verizon also has this error message when attempting to toggle on hotspot. I have also tried a network reset, factory default, and remove/reinstall SIM and none of these have worked.
It's worth noting that my coworker (who received her smartphone the exact same day as I received mine) is having the same exact issue.
I *think* these phones were procured from the Verizon store vs. directly from Google which I've seen some folks mention might be part of the problem.
I have tried calling *611 but after roughly 30 minutes we did not seem to get anywhere and this is no slam personally against the support rep I spoke with but he seemed to be working from a script of suggestions I had already tried.
Would love to hear back regarding any progress made or possible solutions.
Thank you,

Trevorh622,
Ongoing hotspot issues are not what we want for you, and I want to verify the nature of the problem in order to gain a solution. Can you confirm whether your Pixel 3 was purchased directly from Verizon or was it purchased as an unlocked device?

I am also having this issue. It has been going on for weeks - ever since switching from a Pixel to a Pixel 3. Please assist as soon as possible because it is impeding my ability to get work done.
