Last year on an RV trip, connections ended up LTE at all locations. I found a way to set the preferred network type to 5G, but can't remember how I did it. The same thing is happening on this year's RV trip.
Verizon's page on the subject recommends: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs then tap Preferred network type then choose 5G.
But on my Pixel 6 Pro under the current update of Android 13, there is no Preferred network type item to tap, on the page that results from tapping SIMs. I tried dialing *#*#4636#*#* but there is no 5G choice, only more complex ones that are beyond my current knowledge.

We want to make sure you're able to get the best service possible. Are you having any problems with your service while traveling other than the 5G icon not turning on?

Hello. Starting with Android 13 those options are allowed to be controlled by the network carrier. Folks with the same phone on Google Fi (and other carriers) still have that Preferred Network Type option. Those of us using Verizon no longer have that option available in Settings, it's all manged automatically when using a Verizon SIM.

I am the OP. It was Scott5337 who mentioned that the manage preferred option does not exist.
I can follow your steps 1-4. Step 5 seems impossible because there is no "Preferred network type" to scroll to, on the SIM page.

Once again, your directions do not match the current state of Android (A 13, updated Aug 5).
I followed the instructions to Settings and then Network & Internet, but the Network & Internet page does not include a "Mobile Network" link. I know it's hard to maintain Help pages for changing software, but Verizon seems worse than other tech companies in this regard.

With Android 13 the Preferred Network Type option is up to the network carriers to decide if the option appears or not. Google gave the control of that option to carriers like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. On Verizon phones we no longer have an option to select Preferred Network Type. The same phone on other carriers DOES have that option. So it's clear that Verizon removed the option from phones operating on the Verizon network. I am not bashing on Verizon & not complaining, I am a 25+ year customer. I am just trying to explain that the Preferred Network option does not exist for us on Verizon phones.

I am no longer complaining about the lack of a Preferred Network option, rather about the abysmal state of Verizon Help pages, which often give advice that can't be followed, because it was written about past versions of software.

We are under a business account with 150+ phones. We have a dispatch center that communicates with 80+ drivers. Being the IT person here at the company and well familiar with how unreliable 5G is, all the phones were set to the preferred network type for LTE. All phones were under Android 13 and we had to use a third party app to make the LTE option/setting visible to change.
Now that Android 14 rolled out, it broke the app and visibility and reverted back to preferred/recommended 5G on all the phones. We are having constant call drops and/or calls going to voicemail. All the S23 phones were from Verizon. We cannot sustain this and will switch carriers if Verizon does not give us the option...like now!
We have other issues with our service now going on four months and they are doing nothing to resolve. Verizon if going down the tubes. Never remember it being this bad. May be time to give another carrier some business.

I recently discovered this change myself. It was quite frustrating to learn. The 5G network where I work causes my battery to get warm if I use the network a lot. It especially doesn't help the 5G network isn't as widespread in that city or in the surrounding areas as other larger cities.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

It is a little frustrating. From everything I have read Google now allows network carriers to decide if we have that option or not. Folks on Google Fi, and other carriers, still have the option to select their preferred network type. Since we no longer have that option then Verizon chose to disable the option. Maybe they didn't mean to? I am currently on Android 14 beta and that option is still disabled by Verizon in Android 14.

It is especially annoying because I own an unlocked model of the Pixel 7 and I did use the setting previously as my plan originally didn't have a 5G network access and the 5G network wasn't great so I preferred to stay on the LTE network. I only switched it allow 5G network after confirming I could use the 5G network without extra charges and I was having issues with the LTE network at work deep in the middle of the office building. Recently I started regretting switching it and discovered the option gone.

Same here. But we have a Verizon SIM and use them on the Verizon network, so we have to follow their guidelines.
