Unable to listen to voicemail unless on speaker. I use a Google Pixel 8. Just upgraded from a Pixel 5.
I use Verizon. However, the issue was on both phones. So, it's not the device. Need to be able to listen to messages and not be on speaker all the time.

We want to make sure you can use your voicemail without any issues and we're going to make sure you get the help you need. Are you using your visual voicemail or calling *86 to listen to your voicemail?

Using the voicemail within the phone app. Shows a voicemail, I hit play, and must use speaker so message does not skip.

Have you called your voicemail to try to sync it? You can call your voicemail by pressing and holding 1 on your keypad. ~Peter

That sounds like the integrated Visual Voicemail designed by Google for their Pixel phones. As it is intended to be a "visual voicemail" instead of an audio only recording, it might be designed to always play while on speaker mode.
While I also have a Pixel phone, I don't utilize the built-in visual voicemail feature. Therefore I have to manually dial *86 to access my voicemail. I will echo the other posters suggestions to try to access your voicemail via the *86 option to see if you can listen to the voicemail without the speaker automatically activated.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
