Why is my phone locked and why can't it be unlocked?

Hello,

I purchased a brand new Pixel 8a two days ago from Wal-Mart that was supposed to be unlocked.  I did not sign up for any verizon contract at the time of purchase nor have I ever used verizon services.

Upon attempting to migrate my Google Fi service to the new phone, I encounter a message notifying me that the phone is in fact carrier-locked and that I need to contact verizon to unlock it.

Ok, so I call the verizon customer service number and speak with a CSR who tells me that the phone cannot be unlocked because it has no previous account associated with verizon (no kidding -- it's a new phone).  She confirms that the phone is locked but cannot explain why, only reiterating that they can't unlock the phone.

The phone is paid in full, I've never had a verizon account so there's no reason I wouldn't be in good standing, and the phone has no history associated with it as it is brand new.  Returning the phone is not a good option for me as the store I bought it from is in another state.  I tried calling the electronics department of the Wal-Mart that sold me the phone but of course they had zero insights and zero interest.

What am I supposed to do?

If you were meaning to buy an unlocked phone and the Wal-Mart people sold you a Verizon phone instead, then that's their mistake and you should ask for a refund or an exchange.  A Verizon phone must be used on Verizon for 60 days before it automatically unlocks.  With them being a big chain, seems like any of their locations should accept the phone back so long as you have a receipt.  Otherwise, you're out of luck and would have to try to sell the phone to a Verizon customer.

Was the phone marked for Verizon Wireless service? Was there a reason why you didn't purchase the phone as an unlocked model or SIM free model? Can you not return it to the nearest Walmart?

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

The phone was not marked and it was sold to me as an unlocked model.
Their return policy states that it has to be the same store and within 14 days of the purchase, which is quite a hassle because the store is 6 and a half hours away.

Thanks for the reply.  That is indeed the case:  I was sold the phone as an unlocked model and apparently received a verizon model instead.
I do have the receipt, but when I inquired about their return policy they said that it had to be the same store.

Reselling the phone at a loss isn't very appealing for obvious reasons, nor is returning the store, but I suppose those are my only two options.

It just seems absurd to me that Verizon absolutely *can* unlock the phone but refuses to for reasons they can't even explain.

Per Verizon's unlocking policy, the phone will only unlock if you use the phone on Verizon's network for at least 60 days.  If you aren't a Verizon customer, there is no way to get the phone to unlock.  The information is on the website if you do a search for "device unlocking policy".

That's pretty messed up that someone at the Wal-Mart sold you a carrier phone instead of an unlocked one, and now they won't take it back.  Unless you can find someone who lives closer to the store in question who is willing to return the phone for you, I'd try to see if there's a way to file a complaint with Wal-Mart because it is still their mistake.

Thanks for your help.
I considered just switching to Verizon for the 60 required days, but as luck would have it, I live outside their coverage area.

I explained very clearly to the wal-mart employee that I had service with Google Fi and that I needed an unlocked phone.
I do understand that Verizon's policy is not to unlock the phone, but I don't understand why.  Its not like I can't prove that I bought the phone, and even the CSR I talked to was baffled as to how I could be sold a verizon phone by mistake.

The situation is so frustrating that its almost comical.

I’m sorry to hear that you are in this situation. As  SynthpopAddict mentioned Verizon will only unlock the phone if it is used on their network for a set amount of time and all financial responsibility has been cleared (if any money is owed). I don't think Verizon will unlock the phone because a Walmart employee made an obvious mistake. This is a Walmart problem, unfortunately. That employee made a mistake and Walmart needs to fix it. This is another reason why I would personally never buy a cell phone at Walmart. I always buy right from the manufacturer (Google in this case) or from Verizon.

Expensive lesson for me, but you're absolutely right.  Next time I'll be buying from google.

I’d still take my chances in returning it at the nearest Walmart. It’s absolutely ridiculous that Verizon can’t unlock a full paid off phone, and that Walmart told you it has to be the same store.
