4G tower at work...but Mostly 1G on Thunderbolt??

Sorry if there's another thread on this- but the ones I read were confusing.  There is 4G less than a mile from my job.  However, yesterday at the pool there, my phone was randomly getting 4G, but mostly 1G!  I don't get it?!  My Droid always had 3G at work.  Wouldn't that be the obvious next step down?  Why does it just go to 1G?  Please help me with the most elementary explaination- haha.  I just don't know what to do.

Another simpler question- I was setting my sounds and picked one for MSG, Call, Alarm, Calendar...then there's one for "Notification."  Well, those are ALL notifications.  So no matter what I have the others set at, the Notification sound is what I hear.  There's got to be an easy answer for this.

Thank you so much.  I have only had this phone 2 days and have a lot more questions- but am trying to sort through the forums for answers!

begining yesterday, the 4g network has been going in and out. download an app called "LTE OnOff." then open it and set it to "CDMA auto (PRL)."  this will force it to 3g. there are 5 different settings you can put the phone to with this app. i only set it to "LTE" or "CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto" when i know i will be in a strong 4g area for a while. when you move in and out of the 4g network it struggles, bouncing back and forth from 4g to 3g (or even to 1X). i find it easier to leave it forced to 3g, unless i know i'm in a strong 4g area for a while.

you can select the tone inside of each seperate app (in that app's settings). if you select "default notification" then it will be whatever you have selected in your main settings as the default notification sound. but you can have the alarm be one tone and the sms be another tone and the email be the "default notification" tone. but they are changed in the app's settings.
