How are the contacts saved now on the phone?  Are they google contacts, phone contacts or something else?  Google contacts are already synced to those servers.  You can use Backup Assistant for phone only contacts.  You can use export the contacts to your SD card through the People app.  The option is under the menu button when you have the People app open.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Everytime you add a new contact you should chose "google" in "contact type" this will save your contacts to your google account and can be accessed by going to "gmail.com" and signing in with your google username and password (yourname@gmail.com) then click on the "Gmail" dropdown box and select "contacts". All your google contacts are synced automatically here and are what you call "backed up". Now if you ever "factory reset" your phone your google contacts will be added back automatically after you set your phone up with your gmail account
Now if and when you create a "new contact" and dont select it as a "google" contact, and instead leave it alone and "phone or sim" card are selected then these contacts will never be synced up with your google account and will only be saved on the local phone. Now if looking over all your contacts and see that they are all or some are "phone or sim" contacts then there is no way to make them "google" contacts, you have to remake the contact. after a few contacts added I noticed the dropdown menu box to select as a contact type will stay as google by default. have fun with the conversion!

Hi Loverine! Jdfrye definitely has some good information for backing up your contacts via google.  Android devices have multiple backup options, so I also wanted to let you know about Backup Assistant.

Backup Assistant is a Verizon Wireless product that will backup your contacts to our internal server.  If you would like to set this up you would choose Settings > Account & Sync > Backup Assistant and follow the prompts to setup your account.  When you save your contacts you would choose "Phone" and they will save via Backup Assistant.
