Can't get service on new Thunderbolt?

I recently purchased a new Thunderbolt as I broke the screen on my old one. I switched the SIM card and went through the steps on the Verizon site to "switch" your phone service to a new device. I am not getting my texts or connection on the new phone and I cant figure out why? Do I jsut need to wait longer for the service to switch devices or am I missing something? PLease help!

Hmmm...strange does it say Verizon Wireless when you pull down the notification bar?
is it brand new or used?
