Can't save MMS pics at all

I have one photo I very much need to get off of the phone (out of the default VZW MMS app) and on to a PC, email, SD Card, etc.  Unfortunately the only option is to save the picture and NO pic will save from the MMS app to the SD card.  I get a message that "Your SD Card is low on  storage space."  When I first started trying to save this photo there was over 3GB free on both internal and external memory. The pic is only 40kb so space is NOT an issue but I tried to clear as much space anyway figuring it was a quirk and got the SD card up to 8GB free.  That's way more than enough but it would not save. I rebooted. It didn't work. I inserted a clean formatted SD card and it still will not work.  What else can I do to get a simple 40kb picture sent to me via MMS off my Thunderbolt?  Several reboots have also been done and I run a clean stock version of the current OS supplied via Verizon. The photo can't be resent to me.

That is strange. Have you tried forward the message and the picture to an email address?

Yes but I was so focused on that one important photo I did't realize not one single photo will save to the SD card claiming it is too full. I even went to the folder on the SD card where previous MMS photos have been saved, deleted them since they have been already backup up, then tried to save them again from the very same default MMS app and still nothing will save to the SD card claiming too little space. Guess its time to make my first call to support.

Try installing Handcent message application free from market, it will allow you to see all the same messages in stock app but it may allow you to save it...

ONLY If this works then you may want to backup all messages and clear the data for the stock sms application located at Settings / Applications / Manage Applications / All Tab / Messages / Clear Data.

OK, I'm over backing up images that is complete. However the problem persists.  Wildman, as per you instructions the option to Clear Data is disabled even if force stopped.  The only option I can press is Clear Cache which doesn't seem to do anything.

Ok try Settings / Applications / Manage Applications / All Tabs / Messages / Clear Data

Right, that is grayed out & disabled even after a force stop.  It is messages 1.00.000.206244.605 if that helps anything.

Strange, you seem to be seeing a different view than I have, does your look like the screen shot below?

The differences are your version of Messages. Mine is 1.00.000.206244.605 and your is much higher.  The Clear Data button is not an option for me (grayed out). Weird!  In About phone, my Android Version is 2.3.4, Sense 2.1, Software 2.11.605.9. I did a check for new software updates and it listed none available.

My Thunderbolt matches your software numbers. I am currently running it in airplane mode without a SIM card and I am completely stock.

The clear data button is grayed out for me in the Message application too.

Now that's strange because I am stock, the only thing I have is a few custom skins installed...

@JRAHNBO2

If all fails try  backup all SMS with MyBackup or SMS Backup from market and do a hard rest to see if this resolves the issue...

The only thing I haven't done since the last system update (Gingerbread) was a factory reset. I meant to do one, but after I cleared the HTC Sense UI, I haven't felt the need to do one.

I talked with Verzion and support was very patient and thorough in troubleshooting even contacting HTC but there was no resolution.  They offered a replacement or help with a factory reset but for now I'll decline until at least ICS comes out or the problem is overwhelmingly annoying. Even better would be when Google Voice offers MMS on our phones. Also as per their suggestion I will check with HTC to see if I can get an updated messaging app. There was the question of why we have different versions of Messaging (they did look at this forum) and Wildman if you have any clue as to why yours is higher since we're both apparently running stock I believe that could be helpful. Actually some of the folks at VZW had different versions and were not sure why. I strongly believe if I could "Clear Data" that would help and beat a factory reset or phone exchange.

At this moment I am insure why my version is different than yours, I update all software when updates are available.  I normally use Handcent so I never paid attention to the stock apps anymore..

I just thought about something I installed a few patches for a few apps on my device and maybe this is the difference on version numbers, I will hard reset a little later and see if this changed this difference.

OK, its fixed!  I can give a much more detailed explanation of how I eventually figured it out if needed but in a nutshell when it was complaining about there not being enough space on the SDCARD it turns out there were too many files as far as the MMS app is concerned in the INTERNAL memory.  Once I eliminated a certain number of files internally the problem went away.  As a further test I maxed out space on both internal and external memory and was able to continue to save MMS pics without issue. Then I added a large number of files but with small sizes and the problem returned proving the app has some sort of bug with the total number of files internally even though it complains about lack of space externally.  So, in the future, if you see the error from the MMS app that it can't save a picture to the SD card the problem may be a generic catch all for a variety of issues including what it considers an excessive total number of files internally, not externally.  Thanks all.   The version number difference thing is still weird but oh well.
