Check For Software Update Question

I don't think this is a problem, but up until this morning, every time I tapped on Software update/Check new, I would get the message Checking for new software available, then I would get one of two messages. Either No software update available, or a message like No connection available.

Since this morning, I get the message Checking for new software available, then it just goes away and I don't get any other messages. I went to Verizon and the rep I talked to tried it and his did the same thing. Any one else noticed this change?

mine always says "checking for new software available now"....then it pops up with "ERROR service unavailable." it's been like that since the day i bought it.

I received this error over the past few days:

But starting today, I still receive the initial error, but it goes away on its own and I then displays the following error:

I hope this is positive news, so I contacted Verizon Support and was told they know nothing about any updates for the Thunderbolt. I contacted HTC Support, but they said the latest OTA update was released last Monday. Of course, there was no additional information available...

Neither Verizon or HTC could explain what the error meant. They just always offer to replace it with a refurbished device. Nothing quite like offering customers a phone that was used or abused by someone else, but likely with the same problems....

Yes - I am seeing the exact same thing the OP reported. I check for software update manually, it tries for a second or 2, then it goes away. No error message.

Same problem hear. Anybody else have this problem and has been able to get the new update?? Im hoping this just means it will be available soon but so far Im reading several people have gotten the Update and I still can't even get mine to tell me if it's available or not....

Mine has been doing that for at least a week now. Check new window just goes away with no other notification. No update available, no notice that there is none available, no error. It just disappears.

I am starting the 2nd day of this exact action on my TB. I'm 67 yoa and when my 2 yr. contract is up I will be seriously considering dropping my wireless service. I like gadgets, however, I survived without wireless for 45+ years and I think I can live without it for my time remaining on God's beautiful earth as,for me, a cell phone is now nothing but a gadget. If someone wants me, they can get a hold of me after I get home from my motorcycle ride. :smileyvery-happy:

Don't download it. Its none of the things stated on the flyer. The only thing it does do is take away mobile hotspot. There is no bookmark (no loss), there is no tabbed browsing in app drawer, the bluetooth is not fixed....DONT download it, nothing but lies as usual

As far as I know the Update did add performance improvements to the phone. This according to a few who have already posted hear. Also and most important it seems to have solved the Random Re-Boot problem that has plagued many T-Bolt users that past few months. I can't speak to any of this because my phone has yet to get the stupid Update. I would really like to get it but when ever I check the phone states it is looking for new Update then simply stops with out a response (Normally a window pops up saying No New Update or if there is one....) Im really annoyed hear We all know VZW watches these post so why has nobody from VZW answered this question IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH THE PHONE!!! I I should be told the UPDATE is not available to me or get it not this disappearing act...... HOW ABOUT AN ANSWER BIG RED!!!

I don't think you could be any more WRONG this update is exactly what the pdf doc states, so far completely fixes reboots. It doesnt say it makes a tabbed app drawer. It says app menu tabbed, which is only on certain apps. Helps with performance overall, i absolutely love it and starting to love my phone again after this update. Don't listen to Sbordens post, couldn't be further from the truth. If your getting the service unavailable message look at my thread i started about an email i got from HTC, there is a tip in there(from htc) to get it working.(havent tested the trick cause i aready have the update)

Im not getting service not available mesg. What happens is I tell the phone to look for a new update the window pops up stating that it is looking then a secound or so later it just goes away leaving me on the Update screen (Where it shows Status and Check For Update) Nothing else happens. It's frustrating because the rest of the phone Data wise works fine I can surf send E-mail etc so it's not a service problem and Im not getting a message that says so. Im not getting any message at all and it's driving me crazy because I don't' know if there is a problem with the phone or if it's just that I'm in a holding pattern for the Update if you will. What would help is to know if anybody else that has had this problem while in 3G/4G has been able to get the Update. I know a few of you that where getting no service managed to put the phone in 1x mode and get it but I doubt that will solve my problem the phone is getting to the network but dose not want to give me an answer. So basically it's acting like a VZW Rep when you ask them about Gingerbread :smileyhappy:

Haha nice analogy. I wold try doing a battery pull then once your back up set phone to cdma only then chck for an update, it showed up for me by doing that, once i accepted the update i quickly set it back to 4g so it could download on 4g rather than 3g or 1x. if that doesnt work read my thread i started a few hours ago, there is an email i got from htc in there which they explain how to pull the update if its not working.( I havent tested it since i got update last night and didnt get the email from htc till this morning) let me know if it works. Update: This is what HTC says to do--let me know if it works

"You can attempt a device check in to see if available for your phone, if needed. Open the phone dialer and dial *#*#2432546#*#*. The number should then go blank and you will look for a notification on the status bar for “Check in succeeded.” You can then tap Menu while on the Home screen followed by Settings>System Updates. If unavailable at this time, we recommend waiting a week or so for the notification to show on your phone as staggered releases will take some time to get to everyone."

I started this thread and wanted to update it with what I've done so far.

After waiting most of last night for the update with no joy, this morning I called Verizon tech support. I had trouble making them understand what the problem was, but they finally caught on. I explained that I had pulled the battery with no success. I then pulled the battery and the SIM card with no success. At that point, the Verizon tech transferred me to HTC tech support.

Went through the same thing with having trouble getting her to understand what the problem was, but again after 3-4 attempts, finally got through to her. Explained again what I had already done and she said I needed to do a Factory Data Reset. OK, I didn't really want to have to set up my phone again, but we did it anyway.

Did Factory Data Reset, went back into the Settings/Software update/Check new. Same thing. At that point, the tech told me that if that didn't fix it, that it must be normal. I told her I knew it wasn't normal because it just started doing it, I have had my phone for 4 months and I know what is normal for my phone. And this isn't normal. I finally gave up trying to convince her and hung up.

Called Verizon back this afternoon and explained everything to them again and was told that if HTC said it was normal, that there wasn't much they could do. She also told me that the update would be pushed out and when it got pushed to me, I would see an Android icon in my status bar and that it might take a week or more. I told her that I got the MR1 update immediately and I'm really not expecting the Android icon to appear. I also am still getting the original message for the Hotspot stating that it is free for the promotional period and I will have to start paying when it's over. Since I've already initiated the 30.00 unlimited option at my Verizon store, I'd say that hasn't caught up with my phone yet either.

I've also tried going into 1x with no success. Fortunately, my phone has been trouble free up until now, so since I haven't been having any reboot, or GPS issues, this isn't a critical update for me, but if I had been having to endure a lot of reboots, I'd probably be pretty hot right now.

Just wanted to let everyone know that doing a Factory Data Reset does not fix this problem.

Also, for anyone interested, My Backup Pro was worth every penny I paid for it. It restored my home screens and data back to the way I had them when I backed up this morning. I only had to go in and reactivate a few of the programs.

I am not happy with the results so far, but I have been very calm and courteous to everyone I talked to. Has anyone had any luck getting this fixed?

Yeah when I came in I showed the update from engaget.com and she told me theirs issues with that update. I had made no reference of gingerbread yet she said it was coming at the end of this month. Hope its true. I for one have if not any reboots on my phone.

I still have hotspot for free. Although this morning it was going in and out of 4G its back to normal.

From What I have seen on the Forums Hear this NEW Update that came out Friday has had no issues at all. Most everybody that has gotten is is extremely happy because they have stated that performance wise they have seen an improvement, and that the reboot issues has gone away completely. Im not shore that I buy that VZW is blocking people from getting this update I got the last update late because I had forgotten it was coming out and stupidly DL it with out checking the forums to see if there where any problems with it. The problems at the time where obvious and well know and VZW did not block me from DL the update to my phone. Also if you trade your phone in for a used one to help solve the reboot problem(before the fix) VZW asked that you do not update the phone. If they could block you from updating why ask you to do this??

As for blocking people that did not get the Reboot bug I have it and STILL DO, I need this update as my phone shuts off or reboots 2-3 times a day on a good day MORE on a not so good day. So A) Why would VZW block me from the Update if my phone is Rebooting and needs it Why if they can block Phones from Updating a bad update did they let me weeks after it was out and well know, OR tell people NOT to update when they swapped out there phones to solve the problem before the update Fix was sent.

If You ask me you got a Rep That was Talking out of there.. Well you can guess confused the first Update with the most recent one and gave you not only bad info but false info as well.

Sorry guys just dose not add up I'm planning to see if I can get some answers today I let you know what Fairy Tale VZW Reps tell me maybe ill actually get a fix...

You know what strikes this whole dilemma is very few people including me have had no reboots at all. I for one don't have it yet and I'm glad because people report it its still there on the new update. A. There is issues with the update itself and they said there's problems with the market which I encountered in the morning which is back to normal. So I'm not going to blame Verizon for something that I haven't encountered. B. The problem was encountered from my understanding from people downloading the updates that came Friday and found it as a error in the system so when I check new the box would disappear and not do anything. Tried 10 times nothing. Sure it doesn't make sense that they didn't say o now there is a error must stop it from getting updated. But they did it through the software update disappear action and that is why I'm blocked from updating so they can fix the issues at hand. Again I agree on some of the stuff but with some lucky few they doubt it because they haven't encountered it.

The main reason I doubt the explanation is that I started having trouble with the software update function before the update was even released. If they knew about the problem before the release, why would they release it at all? I'm pretty sure they learned that lesson the hard way with the last update. And why only block some?

I think there are a lot more people with problem free phones than you may think. It's just that the people who are having problems are understandably more vocal about it. The only problem I've had is this software update issue and I had no reason to post much until I started having the problem. I'd just like an explanation from someone at HTC, or Verizon so I know why it's happening. It's highly unlikely that so many of us suddenly started having the same problem at the same time and someone doesn't know why. I almost never get upset or angry with an honest answer or explanation. I may not like it, but I can accept it a lot better than **bleep**, or just being ignored.

To my Knowledge nobody is reporting reboot issues with the Friday update everybody I have talked to and read hear on this forum has stated that it fixed the problem so I'm confused where people are seeming to think Fridays update did not fix the problem or are claiming it caused the reboot problem.

In a nut shell if your phone was not rebooting from the March Update then you probably don't need this update but if it is this last update (pushed Friday) WILL fix it. The problem people are having is that there phone will not let them do this. Blocking an Update that is working makes no sense where was this in March when the Update was a bad update and caused so many problems for so many T-bolt users.

I had the same issue "Service Not Available...." since I was trying to load the first update months ago. Went to Verizon Store and no help what so ever. They even changed a new SIM card for me. Still the same, I tried pulling out the battery for a period of time then restarting the phone.......Useless. Until I found a solution.....

Get the LTE OnOff App from the Android Market. Install it and run the app. Turn OFF the LTE and switch to CDMA Mode only. Refresh then Update. Give it a few minutes then you will see "1X" in the Data connection. Now try doing a manual Check New under Software Update. It will download fine. Once downloaded and installed, you will need to run LTE OnOff again. Now turn on the LTE mode again. It may take a while for your phone to reconnect to the LTE network again. Don't worry it will. It may take about 45mins to reconnect to LTE.

Hope this helps. It did for me. I am running 1.7 now. Its fine, GPS lock in a lot faster than before. No more Reboot BUT I lost the FREE Hotspot feature. Can't use it anymore. Bummer. Other than that I am happy with it so far.

Thanks for trying, but I've had LTE onOff since I got my phone 4 months ago and somewhere in this thread I mentioned that I had already tried going to 1x with no success. For some reason, some of us have this problem and some don't. Maybe they're just trying to slow down the rollout of the update and one of these days it will suddenly start working again. I hope. If my phone starts doing something abnormal, I would at least like an explantation before being told to do a factory reset.

I just got off the phone with a Verizon tech guy because I was having trouble with my stock keyboard, some letters not working. If you are not using the keyboard that part of the screen works. I pulled battery and I Factory reset, that didn't work so I called Verizon. I don't understand it just randomly started doing this today.

Anyway he asked me if I had received the update that had been pushed on Friday. I stated that I had not. He said that they pushed it to a the first bunch and something undesirable occurred, so they pulled it. He said that he received notice that it will be pushed again on the July 12th.

He said that the update could fix my problem, but asked if I wanted a replacement, I said that I would wait to see if the update would help since I have read that ppl have gone through many replacements before getting one that works. He said that was fine and he would note that I would wait for update, and if it would not work they would send me a replacement.

you wont. you'll need to find the official update and manually install it, like you did with the leaked one.

Ah, ok, thanks. Well, after reading about the update it looks like I'll just wait for Gingerbread to come out. The leaked MR2 I have installed is working just fine. No issues with reboots, 4g or GPS.

I have spoken with Verizon and HTC about this as my phone is doing the exact same thing described by the OP. Verizon tried to do a hard factory reset which i declined. Other than that they were worthless and had no idea how to help me. HTC said there was nothing wrong with my phone and that its because the update is so big that they had to do it in bunches otherwise it would lock up the network if every TB owner was allowed to download it at the same time. So according to HTC there is nothing wrong with the phones that have the dialog box disappear.

I just started a new thread with a fix to this problem. It apparently is somehow connected to the Android Market. I found a link to the new update on another forum and after downloading and installing it, my Software Update is now working normally again and I have downloaded and installed the update. We are all getting the same problem with the defective phone. I want all of you to know that I personaly will begin taking some sort of action to be reimbersed for the phone as we are not getting any support from HTC nor Verizon. I will be filling a complaint with the The Better Business Bureau. I will wait four days then begin learning about how to take legal action in getting either a full refund for phone or replacement with other phone. If any other persons who spent money of this defective product please comunicate with me so we can begin to take action as violated customers.

Your posts have been most helpful. Can you tell us what the build number should be when the update is done so folks can confirm it happened properly?

I had the exact same problems the OP had.

I started checking for the latest update the night it was released and could not get it. I then learned that Verizon was pushing the OTA updates in batches to avoid a huge logjam on their regional and local networks, and was told that it would take a week or two to push the OTA update to all ThunderBolt owners and that I should just check my phone once a day...and that I would eventually get the update when it it was pushed to my "region".

I did this and late Tuesday night, 12 June and/or early Wednesday morning, 13 June...the update was pushed to my phone and I successfully downloaded it and am EXTREMELY HAPPY with the results.

FYI...I have not had one reboot in the past 78 hours... :smileyhappy: !!!

At least now we know that if our software update messages disappear, we'll still get the update eventually. I know they were busy with the update, but it would have been nice if someone had explained that to us though.

July 17th. Still no update. This process of downloading giant files over the air is poorly though out. Android will only get bigger and bigger. SOLUTION: VZW needs to start using the Internet to push and pull updates. Why not let users update via WiFI instead of OTA? This would allow many users to update at once and not crash the wireless network, which should be reserved for Voice first and data second. This is a very simple solution and the future way to upgrade handsets for all carriers.

It's the 18th. No update. Still says checking for new and then nothing. As reported previously it hasn't returned an error or a no updates available message for a couple of weeks now.

The update only began being distributed on July 8, 2011. That was ten days ago and is not even two weeks yet.

In my opinion that is completely irrelevant.

Per the Verizon Wireless employee MarquiaF_VZW post the update was supposed to be out to everyone by the 18th and if we did not have the update by then we were to post here.

I really don't care if it has not been two weeks. I am following a Verizon wireless employee's instruction and I would expect others to do that as well until we are told by Verizon that the date has slipped.

One thing I'm curious about is in this part of her message: "If you have still not received the update by then and still saying no updates available when you check for updates, reply to this message and we can further troubleshoot"

They are still not saying anything about the original problem people were having with not getting any messages. Are you getting a message saying "no updates available", or no messages at all after the first "Checking for software update" message?

I'd say Pat the list i seen is going to address some important things for T-bolt. And hopefully it gets to all of the T-bolts soon, as for me i got another year :smileysad: before i can upgrade but i do have a HTC device its a Dinc. An then i got Birtha my Droid X so i keep Hoppin with those Too.! :smileytongue: :smileyvery-happy: :smileywink:

I replied to the original message the first time (bottom of page 5 for me) -- unfortunately this forum doesn't show what is in response to what (unless that's a setting I haven't seen somewhere yet).

FYI -- The original message from MarquiaF_VZW had said to send a PM, but I see it was edited sometime after I read it the first time to say post here so I really hope that this Verizon employee follows through on their post.

I am still not getting any response when I check for new. It says 'Checking' but nothing come back after the 'checking' message goes away. I tried all the tricks in other threads - 3G only, change to 1x only, register the device, etc. No change

Still no update on my wifes phone either... it's very very annoying. A friend that had JUST gotten his Tbolt got his update the FIRST MORNING that it came out, so it's very frustrating that she hasn't gotten hers yet. What is the manual way, because we are willing to do it. This is so irritating.

So youi're referring to the leaked update. To me, a manual update is going to Settings/Software update/Check new on my phone. The leaked update is an option if you don't mind having all of your data wiped. I've already had to spend half a day setting my phone back up because HTC had me needlessly reset my phone because of the original posted problem. I'd rather wait for it to be pushed to me, but it does give you an option. Another reason I wait for the official updates is that I always wonder if the leaked updates are going to have everything that the official OTA does, plus I think it it will cause a problem if you want to get the official OTA later.

I've never had the random reboot problem with my phone, but if I had I might have tried the leaked update just to fix it rather than wait, especially when I stopped getting any messages when I checked for an update.

You shouldn't have any problem receiving the next OTA since the manual update is the same build as MR2. Now you would run into problems if you had installed the previous MR2 leak which ended up not being pushed out which is why I recommended waiting to confirm that it was what Verizon would be pushing. Most people don't like it but a factory reset really is the way to go before updates as data can get corrupted and certain apps just don't like updates. If google would find a way to allow apps like MyBackup Pro without requiring r**t to restore app data, market links, etc the time to set up a phone following a factory reset would be cut down dramatically.

Sorry, but I'm a little confused. Were there two leaked updates, the original and then a second one later?

My phone is not rooted and I have the latest MyBackup Pro which does now save data. MyBackup saved all of my apps and data and then restored them back to my phone with the home screens set up the same as they were before the reset. The problem was that most apps and phone settings had reverted back to the default settings and I didn't notice all of the changes right away. Some were obvious, like apps no longer showing up in my information bar, but others took longer to notice and weren't obvious until I noticed something not working the way I had originally had it set up or apps suddenly auto syncing. Without MyBackup Pro it would have been a much more difficult process however and it was well worth the $5.00 I spent for it.

July 20th 2 pm still no update. Says checking for new software and the window disappears. I've tried all the tricks. Pull battery, pull battery and sim, pull batt, sim and sd, switch modem settings ehdr enabled to just ehdr, checkin verizon etc. Will not do a factory reset though. I've set this phone up too many times already. Please help. Reboots suck.

My phone kept alerting me to an update being ready, and on more than one occasion overnight did I run this update. It was for sure downloading too. When I woke up in the morning, I pulled the battery just in case the phone didn't reboot itself. So, I assumed that the update worked as I didn't have the build number anywhere to reference. As I said, this happened on several occasions. Finally just the other day a message popped up that said something about needing to reboot to install the firmware, I said "Ok", the phone rebooted, and that's when I noticed the new VZW bloatware, and the bigger font for 3G connectivity.

So how or what had been happening over the course of the last week with my phone downloading by not installing the update is beyond me? It finally did though. I'm not sure that I notice any difference. My phone hasn't been rebooting (as much) or losing data connectivity since I replaced it under warranty. In other words, my new Tbolt ran MUCH better than the one I initially bought.

I guess that perhaps the hand-off's might be a bit smoother and I may be in 3G more than I normally would. My route goes in and out of 3G and 1XEV a lot. And since the update, I can't say that I've seen many 1X connections on the phone.

I have noticed that at time the phone can be a big "laggy" though.

I keep getting the same problem, I just got my Droid Incredible 2 last Tuesday and I have tried to get my software update and it says ERROR, Download Failed. I wonder if there something else that's needed to be done for this update to go through.

I'm not familiar with your phone and I may be wrong, again, but I think the latest update we have been talking about is for the Thunderbolt. I think some Incredible 2's may have Gingerbread installed and I don't think it's a 4G phone. Not being familiar with your phone, I don't know if you will get that message if there's no update available, or if it just can't connect to the server. You may have to check with Verizon. Maybe someone more familiar with your phone can help out.

Try doing a battery pull . Pull the battery when the incredible 2 is on then while the battery is out hold down the power button for a few seconds reinstall the battery power it up let it set for about 4 to 5 min then go to software update an try the update again.

One other thing to remember they pute the update out in regions or sections an they do this so if there is a issue with the update they can stop it. an so that everone with a incredible 2 is not affected by it.

I didn't even initiate the update, it just DID it without asking me a thing. I was in my car and the phone was idle. When I got out I noticed it was downloading a firmware update. Not impressed.
