it will likely be like any other update. it's probably fine for most users. however, if you go to any of the device forums around a date that an update was pushed, you are going to find plenty of deviecs that were adversely affected by that update. keep in mind that even the first update that was pushed in may only caused problems for some. there's over a million tbolts out there. some of them will have issues every time there is an update (not necessarily the same ones). i've already seen (on other forums and this one) complaints about connectivity, battery life, etc....since friday's update. i've also seen plenty of posts like budone's. i've never had to do a clean install or factory reset after an update. in the past, every update i've had pushed to other devices went flawlessly. however, if you did recieve the update and it seems to have caused problems, then i would suggest doing a factory reset to see if it clears everything up. some of the developers and users that know a lot more about this stuff than me, suggest that a factory reset after an OTA update is the best method (besides manually doing a clean install).

Alot of times an app that works perfectly fine with the current software can be an issue and cause a conflict with any new update.

I forgot to add to my assessment above, that the battery life does not seem any different. Yesterday I purposely used Tune-In to see how much usage I would get out of the battery. It was my usual 3-1/2 hours.

Today I am just seeing how much standby I get out of it.

It is satisfactory for a stock battery, but VZW (and all carriers) really needs to spend the extra $5/phone to have juicier batteries installed in these new more powerful devices.

yeah....other androids have shipped with 1700-1900mah batteries in the past. that would have made ALL the difference in the world. an 1850 (which wouldn't have had to bulk up the phone any) would've given us 40% more juice and would've been the difference between potential posts of "best battery life of any androids" and the actual posts of "worst battery life ever."

Got the update Friday 7/8 after I manually checked for update.

Have not had a reboot all weekend, and prior to patch was rebooting at least every 12 hours... so that is fixed..

New issues...

I have the HTC extended battery... up until Friday I could charge my phone over night.. take off the charger and drive to work and down to maybe 98% normally 99%... since the patch I am at 95% or less.. . so battery drain is really bad...

Had to reset the phone once (Saturday morning) due to not connecting to Market and other internet apps. Since I reset been ok...

When I go to check for updates, it says it's checking and then nothing. If I go to recent apps, select "Software Update" it just goes to the home screen. Nothing. On 7/7 I checked for an update, and it checked and came back with the message that my phone was up to date. Not sure what happened between then and now. I even did a factory reset yesterday, and that still did not help.

Have you compared the baseband version since you did the master reset??

Not sure if it applies to that many people here, but one thing to note is that those who installed the "leaked" MR2 from June are likely out of luck as far as getting the OTA update is concerned. You'll need to manually install the official MR2 which will wipe everything.

Of which, the manual RUU file is saved and safely stored on my computer with a copy of the instructions should I need to go that route if I don't see the update in the next week or two.

Believe that's the MR1 baseband. I'd give it a week and maybe the update will be pushed out to you by then.

I installed the update from the RUU.I have installed updates in the past for my HTC Incredible and Moto Droid. The phones were never better after the updates so I would go and install the RUU's. The difference in performance has been amazing.

It took me an hour to install the RUU for the Thunderbolt. This included downloading the 420mb RUU file, installing the RUU, and redownloading and setting up my apps. It was an hour well spent.

Anyone who is having issues with their Thunderbolt (other than battery issues) I would strongly advice you install from the RUU.

1) I got it the night it came out.

2) We have two of the phones and never had a random reboot so nothing to fix for us, but no reboots after either.

3) Performance is about the same, no changes major enough for us to tell performance wise either negative or positive.

4) No new problems on either of our devices so far.

So far it seems to run smoother, but I have not had this update long enuf to say for shore. As of now GPS locks in much faster STRONG 3G signal at home with occasionl 4G surprise (Not bouncing constantly) at work STRONG 4G signal and never lose it.

There have been a few people reporting problems of some sort or another at the moment I have yet to experience any of them for now. Battery life seems fine, GPS and Data signals are strong, no reboots at all. The New Aps that they so nicely gave us are if you ask me excessive and useless. There are 5 VZW related Aps that I will never use and should be able to remove with out rooting my phone. It sucks but it's not the end of the world either just annoying and takes up space Id rather use my self.

I got the update on the morning of the 9th by manually checking for it. The OTA update went pretty well, but phone was clanky until I did a battery pull (see below). Battery life has improved, somewhat, but there is still a problem with the radio with occasional network drops. Signal levels are still the same. I have only had a very few reboots, but none since the update. Everything else seems as before.

One issue I had after the update is that people I called were telling me I was unintelligable and "breaking up". I am guessing a process was in some kind of trouble that resolved itself on the restart when I did the battery pull. However, I did call tech support about it, and at tier two was informed by a very professional sounding young lady that even though my current build is 1.70.605.0 after the update, that she had an email about a 2.xx.xxxx.x build that has been released and that my phone should be getting that push this week. I asked her to make sure of what she was seeing and she confirmed it. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but will wait and see if anything happens. (If any VZW folks can PM me about about this, I would appreciate it).

IMO, all in all the update may not be what we were hoping for, but it does seem to have fixed the more boneheaded problems with the TB.

I must have gotten the photo-negative upgrade version... I got the exact opposite of what was indicated... :smileyvery-happy:

Since I did the OTA on Sunday morning, I have had NO 4GLTE signal ANYWHERE. The data signal toggles between 3G and non-existent, and the phone signal is 0-1 bars. All I really got was the "My Verizon Mobile" app added, along with the other VZW bloatware. I even tried doing the wipe-and-full-install method, and I'm in the same position.

Didn't get the NY Times bookmark, either, FWTW.

Yesterday when I called tech support, I was instructed to go to the VZW store and pick up a new SIM card. I did this, and I still can't pick up 4GLTE. After two hours of trying everything that he, two other salesmen and two managers knew, the gentleman at the store decided to call it a defective phone, and they're sending me a replacement. We'll see where that gets us. If *that* phone works and doesn't have the update, it ain't getting it...

Would anyone know how to roll back the handset to the previous firmware version, or know where the RUU for the previous version might be found? Yeah, they are sending me a new one, but it's not in my nature to sit and wait. Gotta tinker... :smileywink:

UPDATE: Just got the replacement handset. Doesn't have the upgrade on it. Put in the SIM and SD cards and the battery, booted it up, and I'm solidly back in 4GLTE-land. The phone signal is 2-3 bars, too.

Like I said above, works + doesn't have it = ain't getting it.

Guess I'll set my snooze alarm for the GB release... assuming they get *that* one right...

Yes, so far, but granted only had the update for half a day. Much improved in that small time frame, my phone was rebooting 5-7x a day

Performance is much improved. Work in a location that was bouncing bewteen 1x & 3G constantly. Sometimes i had to restart the phone which sucked a good 3-4% of battery life each time and sometimes even that didn't get the signal to pick up 3G. So far i've had a strong 3G all day at my office and strong 4G when in a coverage area.

The phone also is running much smoother, i.e., no glitches with apps and UI, and battery life seems to be improved somewhat... granted, if it drains to 55% now with heavy use up from 50% prior, is it THAT much better? but still, worth noting.

None so far. All in all much happier with the phone, like its brand new again.

Only ever experienced 2 reboots, so not that much of an issue for me. None since the update. HOWEVER, the stock android browser has closed on me unexpectedly several times during use and still continues to do so. It does this without any warning or "force close" notice"....as if it never happened.

3)How is the performance of the phone now?

Very laggy and apps now struggle to perform efficiently. Simple tasks such as opening the stock android browser leads to a black screen with only the notification bar showing and active.

See #3. No improvements in battery life and certainly not in performance.

Update to my update...

Phone powered itself down yesterday while I was on a call. It has not done that before, so I can only assume it is due to this update. This is extremely disappointing.

VZW, how hard can it be to get this once "flagship" phone of yours to work properly?

You must not been around when Droid X was classified as the Flagship and was release... It went through 2.1, 2.2 and then started making progress with 2.2.1.

Droid X was first power device and TB is the first 4G device so I figured there would be bugs...

It's amusing at how people want cutting edge technology but expect it to just work perfectly with no quirks. We all basically signed up as beta testers, nothing more, nothing less. I got the 7/8/11 update. It did not fix the reboot problem. It also did not fix the audio problem (i.e. in a phone conversation I can hear the other party but they cannot hear me. This problem appeared after I ran the 5/13/11 update - Build No. 1.13.605.7/Baseband: 1.16.00.0402w_1).

These are significant problems which I hope that Verizon Wireless & HTC can solve soon.

Aside from these two major problems, my phone works fine.

Lose 4G (drops to 3G) and mail connection for POP3 account (Requires force closing mail app, the restart app)

As for the statement

Where I work Beta testers are compensated for being just that, "Beta testers" and they are in the loop for timeline on fixes.

To most Tbolt owners the cryptic use of the word "soon" doesn't do either of those.

When I got up early Wednesday morning, 13 July...the LATEST update was on my phone when I checked for "New Updates".

After reading many "new update" reviews (from the previous 7 days) on this and other forums on the web, I was convinced that it was a GOOD, CLEAN release and went ahead and downloaded it on my bolt.

I am now VERY SATISFIED with this phone and am happy to report that the update:

1) appears to have completely fixed the random rebooting problem; my phone is at 76:00 hours uptime and hasn't had a single reboot since I downloaded the update.

2) very quickly and very accurately pinpoints my exact location for BOTH the accu-weather and weather bug elite weather apps on my phone

3) very quickly and very accurately pinpoints my exact location (within 5 meters) for BOTH the Google Maps and MapQuest apps on my phone

4) provides a stonger, more consistent 3G (I don't yet have 4G where I live) signal

5) provides the My Verizon app which I have used frequently (and liked very much) on my past phones

6) appears to have somewhat improved my battery life

I have ALWAYS had a very clear and very loud incoming and outgoing 3G call experience and NEVER had any bluetooth connection or call quality issues...and am happy to say that the new update did NOT change any of these good things.

Now, if HTC and Big Red will just quit fooling around an give us the 2.3.4 Gingerbread update...they and all ThunderBolt owners will have a phone of "flagship quality and performance" (whatever that is), and can say that it is now truly THE phone to which all others will be compared and the ONE to beat!!

This update only fixed one thing on my poor TBolt and that was the rebooting. Now instead of my phone rebooting on the upwards of 3x daily, it now will reboot once every few days...but that's it.

The data has actually gotten WORSE. I live in the Philly area and I get 4G basically EVERYWHERE. Ever since this update, I have rarely seen any 4G, it's all 3G plus my data will randomly go out completely and I have to do a complete reboot in order to get data back. I have to stay on wifi most of the time in order to keep my data going.

My touchscreen is still touchy, less glitchy but my pattern unlock still likes to glitch and annoy me.

And finally, the My Verizon app still doesn't work! I cannot for the life of me, even after clearing the data and force stopping the app it will not connect to the servers.

I just wish HTC and Verizon would stop fussing about and get us Gingerbread...right now I feel like that's the TBolt's only hope. I have a usable upgrade coming up soon and I'm quite tempted to pull another 200-300 to get the Charge, the Samsung interface is my favorite, I love it more than Sense.

3) How is the performance of the phone now: Aside from the random reboots getting worse, I've noticed that my battery drain when on 3G only is now as short as it is on LTE/3G combined. I was able to get through 27hours with light use on 3g only and now I can make it about 8 hours with the same usage. Also, I have had to toggle between the both of them and wireless more than a few times when it loses any and all data transfers. Today I had to restart to get any data. Last thing, I noticed that when the phone is plugged in and charging, the screen is pretty unresponsive to touch. That has never been a problem but is now.

4) Has the latest update brought any new problems: Guess I should have read the questions before replying. New problems are listed on #3.

TB is already outdated....Everything's outdated within 3-8 months of it's release. Think about when the HTC came up with the concept of the "Mecha" a.k.a Thunderbolt.....they think of it, design it, build it, test it, re-test it, send it out to consumers....it will be on the EOL list just as quick as the Eris was. I had my Eris for 2 years.

changed ROMS obsessiveley and never had an issue with it. Girlfriend went through 4 Eris's in 5 months because of defects.

Mine didn't really have a "reboot" problem, but it resets occasionally after I come out of an app. It seems to be doing this more often now.

My phone seems to be slower now. My screen seems to lock up or slower at moving side to side. I lose connection to the 4G/LTE more often and I need to do a restart on my phone to get it back.

I was a lot happier with my phone before the last update. Wish that I would not have updated.

Really wished I would have stayed with the Iphone now. I moved from AT&T to Verizon to get this phone. Now regretting it

I have officially gone past one week (seven full days) without any kind of reboot since the last update. I have not shut down the phone. The phone hasn't rebooted itself. It hasn't even shut itself off.

I still get data drops while in the LTE / CDMA mode, but I going to live with them for the next month. Why? Because where I work is getting LTE on August 18, 2011. I want to see any early unofficial LTE signal.

I wasn't getting any data drops that I am aware of when I had the phone set to CDMA only mode.

All the other issues I had, severe keyboard lag, sending texts/info to random people not selected (from my contacts list) crap battery life, and so on and so forth.. nope.

It did NOTHING.

As a matter of fact my data connection is pretty much GONE since the update. I live in a 4g area and I swear depending on which way the wind blows I lose service. After ten or so complaints to verizon tech they just said they would investigate, after telling me its because I live on the fringe of the city.

WRONG. I can drive 70 miles in either direction and get 4g coverage.

Its my city that has the issue, I can stand next to the tower and get ZIP.

Its absolutely horrific. My phone is FACTORY. No apps, no downloads, NOTHING. Not even a picture and I still have issues.

My 'refurbished' model they sent to replace this one had the software update and rebooted non stop AND had ZERO data connection. Period. At all.

Fedex mailed it back yesterday.

I hate to say it but I sincerely doubt that any amount of software updating, is going to fix all the problems these phones have. Something is vastly wrong with this phone. I realize many people love these phones, and yes everyone gets a lemon sometimes, but the sheer amount of issues, complaints and 'lemons' makes me think that maybe in reality people are getting the few rare golden eggs and the rest are rotten.

Had The Update Over 2 Weeks now No reboots as I repoted in previous Post No Data Problems now that wher I live 4G is full covrage, and no lag with the phone. Honestly it's liek a new phoen for me the Update improved it alot.

I do have to agree thou I think we may be looking at about a 40-60 split of tuly disfuctional phones and ones that work great. Many people I know that have the T-bilt are vary happy with there phones only a few are having problems and most people in this fourem then again we proably wodul not have been hear if we had no problems. Ther is defently a bad batch of them out there thou...

I have not had near as many issues with my device until this last update. Now TB is jacked up. Dropped calls, emails not going out, and slower than frozen syrup. These vast apps have taken over my phone and I don't have any mods

that's unfortunate, because there were MANY more complaints before this last update (reboots) that it fixed for most people that had the issues.

not via the method they were delivering it - i went after waiting 2 weeks and downloaded the full firmware from Android Police. I was rebooting 10/15 times every day and cuoldn't take any more.

at times it seems a bit "laggy" and the interface isn't as responsive. I can be trying to scroll through apps drawer or email lists and it doesn't scroll through.... but then accidentally "selects" and "opens" the item, even tho i wsa just scrolling... so i'm not sure if there is some kind of screen cal thing that needs to be done or what.

Battery life is horrible. I have ensured 4g is off, and don't do any more with this phone than I ever did, and yet the battery will drain from 100% charged to dead empty in under 5 hours if I don't charge it more. Even during "reboot era" the phone lasted longer from a battery drain standpoint...

This is horrible and in my opinion a step backwards. they have got to figure a way to make a much more powerful battery for this phone that uses the same footprint as the original (not that extended big door one.. won't fit in my case or in my car dock!), and they need to do something about allowing us to turn off all that background crap that runs that we don't need.. i find myself uninstalling apps that sit in the background that have no business doing so in my opinion. but it doesn't help.

4) Has the latest update brought any new problems - my phone would occasionally lag, particularly when using the stock messaging app; but it wasn't anything that a simple reboot wouldn't solve. I received the update and now the phone is constantly lagging. I used to reboot maybe once a week and now I am rebooting up to four times per day without improvement!! Now my phone is also saying it is connected to my car's bluetooth yet the phone is not available on the car, itself.

I have explored simple options like moving my apps to the SD card for better performance, and clearing data/cache. This helps the phone move around within itself better although not how it should. This does NOT improve the text messaging functionality at all. I do not have a task killing app installed on my phone.

I refuse to perform a factory reset. There was nothing wrong with my phone before the update and now I want to throw it against a wall out of frustration. I took it to a Verizon retail store this afternoon and the sales clerk disappeared and returned telling me he will send me a refurb phone in a few days. This does not please me. I do not want someone else's lightly used (and returned) junk. Frankly, I don't think this is a Verizon issue but rather an HTC issue. Therefore, a new phone isn't going to do anything differently in my honest opinion. I am not pleased with this at all.

I can understand the need of a working device. It sounds as if you were not experiencing any of these issue prior to the last software update, correct me if I'm wrong please. Therefore, I suggest doing a factory reset to the device for a fresh start if you have not already addressed this. Please keep in mind this will erase everything so please backup prior. You can complete this reset by Settings>SD & Phone Storage>Factory data Reset>Reset Phone>Erase Everything. Please let me know if this helps you and we will move forward if need be. Thank you.

It broke the beta version of Sype I was using. Now video calling does not work

I still have not gotten the update. I check for update daily and nothing. What is the "android police" and does it work getting the update?

Android Police is a website, you can manually download the update from there but it will wipe all of your data.

Wipe what data? I have but all giving up with Verizon and HTC. This phone is a piece of junk!!!
