Why am I not able to use the built in fm tuner in my HTC One on Verizon? I do not want to stream fm, I want to use the tuner.

I am angry about as well. I don't understand Verizon. It's like the last thing they think about is the customer.

...how the heck are those things a substitute for FM radio? I like it because I can listen to football games on my bike.

If we can't get an official response for why this phone is lacking software support for a built-in hardware feature, shouldn't we consider it a defective product? And when can we expect this defect to be addressed via software update?

That doesn't make it a defective device, it just has an unsupported hardware component. Just like the Nexus 4 and LTE.

Are you saying that the Nexus 4 has an LTE radio that Verizon doesn't support? My understanding is that it doesn't have an LTE radio at all, but that's rather the opposite situation. There is no incompatibility here. Just missing software.
I buy a smartphone with a camera on the back and no camera app because it's "unsupported", shouldn't I feel ripped off?

Moreover, how do you know that this is an "unsupported hardware component" and not a mistake? Can you point me to an official statement from Verizon to back that up? So far they seem to be silent on the issue. Hey, for all I know they're working round-the-clock on a fix.

The specification sheet listed on the HTC web site does not call out any FM tuner for the One.

Got a link for that? If you simply google "HTC One FM Radio" every review and comparison site mentions it.
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one-5313.php
And then there's this from their HTC One support site.
https://support.htc.com/en-uk/005-HTC_One/0E0/020/010
And AT&T touts "Built-In FM Radio". Also mentioned in too many reviews to count.

I guess the whole world has gone crazy.
