HTC Rezound update has shortened battery life and causing device to run hot anyone having issues?

I would look and see what the uptime and active time are under the Battery option under Main, Settings

Also see WHAT is using the battery the most

It's your task killing.

If you have your task killer on auto and when the screen is off then your phone will never go idle. If the apps are always going to load it means your task killer is shutting down the apps incorrectly or they are cached processes(not actually running).

I kill all tasks but Verizon and HTC REQUIRED Apps every 15 minutes. Tidbits is assuming since I have 13 years of OS experience on almost every version of OS and IOS. I unloaded a lot of apps that couldn't help me. This phone was running fine until 3:30pm CST when I recieved a push for the update. I went running using Endmondo and it died. I charged it cleaned apps and turned it on. 3 hours later I'm down to 9% and never used it. GPS and Blue tooth off. Wireless on at home. Only have to charge once a day before this unless conditioning. It could have been a tower issue but happen when I was at the Airport with full signal today.

Battery is at 41% stopped charging at 3:30 when I arrived home.

I realize that but EZ Task Manager isn't running constantly and issue came about after update. Phone has not had any additional software installed and I removed most apps. The phone has been used the same way for the previous 6 weeks with no issue. Until an update the previous day, won't hold a charge and runs a little warmer than before

I have to agree with Tidbits, having the task manager kill apps that will then reopen, only to have the task killer shut them down, only to open will eat a battery quicker than anything.

What does the graph show under MENU>SETTINGS> ABOUT PHONE> BATTERY>BATTERY USE

Also download Battery Monitor Widget. let it run for 3 or 4 days and then in the program click on ESTIMATES>STATISTICS and see what is using the battery based on that program

I have had the update for a little over a day - and I also see a much bigger drain on the battery to a point that I almost don't want to use it much at all. I also find the it seems that I cannot get 4G anymore - and speed has slowed down SO much that it is awful - feels like my old 14.4 modem. I'm not sure if this was all intentional - but I wouldn't doubt it. It really is terrible - and this after telling my wife 3 days ago that I thought the phone and service were pretty good. I'd like to know if I can dump the update and go back without having to do a factory rest - but I doubt it.

Nothing is intentionally done. THAT is a PR nightmare. But since you are having issues getting on 4G. Would you go and set the device to only 3G for the day and see what happens to the battery???

Actually I did go there after I posted and it was already set to CDMA only since the update.

So - that answers one question as to why I'm not getting 4G. So - I went to download a

3 mb file - and it even showed 3G on top - but it took almost 5 minutes for this to download.

Before the update it would have been so much quicker.

This phone went from nice to garbage overnight for me. I'm thinking of returning the

phone and putting service back to the Droid 1 - that's how bad this is.

So you set it back to LTE/CDMA???

Something else you may want to try is:

Call ##778

Choose EDIT

Enter passcode 000000 (6 Zeros)

Choose Modem Settings

Look for REV A. It most likely states eHRPD under it.

Click on that option and change to Enable,

Press OK

Then press MENU and Commit Modifications

Yes - that's correct. I did set it back to LTE/CDMA

I also just did what you asked me to try - and it is now rebooting.

Well I did what you suggested but still it's terrible.

For example - I'll click on YouTube - then it takes about 30 seconds to connect.

Once there I will click on a video - then again almost 30 seconds before it plays - then

every video stops almost every 10 seconds to buffer for another 10 seconds. I can't

watch video's and internet browsing is terrible too - I just keep watching the bar slowly

go across the top. All of this with the 3G showing on top. The Droid 1 at 3G was supersonic compared to this.

Not quite sure what it does. However, when I was having data issues, a VZW rep suggested changing it and data has been flawless since.

Just follow the instructions to change it back.

What is your signal strength?? Not Phone signal (that is shown by the bars or under Network) but data signal??? They can very greatly. My phone gets warm downstairs as it works harder to get a signal.

I have an app Real Signal that gives the signal strength for each radio. But I can not find the app in the market.

I appreciate the help. I just tried more videos and had to finally just get out of it

and put the phone down - it's just too frustrating to watch. I emailed the rep I used at Verizon

as I have heard some people having trouble after the update too - I'll see what happens.

I still have a few days to return the phone - so if it doesn't get better that's what I'm going to do.

I'm relieved that I'm not the only person with this issue... it's pretty frustrating that the phone gets so hot at the most random of times, even a considerable amount of time after manually killing unneeded tasks. I did have to change some foolish settings that were altered after the update (real brilliance, Verizon). My display had to be returned to NORMAL from High Performance; Sleep had to be put back to AUTOMATIC; also the Power mode had to be returned to AUTOMATIC. I downloaded a battery widget yesterday to keep an eye on the power level, even before I stumbled across this thread, and after making these three changes, I've seen a noticeable slowing of power consumption. If it resumes it's power-devour I'll repost. Hopefully it'll be better now.

You know... Other than the bloatware, and RIL Verizon has nothing to do with the code... Just saying...

I would have thought the same thing - but I can't explain how after this update things went to hell.

It didn't take long to download the 52mb update file - but now it takes 5 minutes or more to

download a 3mb file. The only thing that changed was the update - so to me it has to have had some effect.

Browsing is dead slow, youtube is almost unusable now - and before things were pretty good. Something

sure changed - I know that for sure - and I physically didn't change anything.

Have you tried clearing your browser and youtube cache?

Updates 5h 15m phone reported 24% call usage. Verizon shows 5 phone calls and only 29 minutes of usage throughout the day. If it is on CDMA and using 24% battery on 29 minutes talk time this would be the worst phone ever! I have never used more than 400 minutes in a month.

Phone went into boot loop and had to perform a factory reset. Phone never held a charge on standby time over 6 hours with minimal settings.

Display was over 60% with battery usage and battery monitor showing phone on full charge would last less than a day on standby. Updating and recharging phone again.

Also do a bump charge. Once the device shows it is charged, power it down. The light will change from Green to orange again showing it is charging again. let it fully charge and then powerup and use the device

Just a stupid question. Do you think that possibly the network was at fault too - in that they realeased

a big update - and possibly it bogged it down a bit ? I read about the update and got it right away -

so maybe I was so early and attribute the slowness to the update - but it could have been the network.

I do notice performance has improved a bit since yesterday - still a bit off - but better. Battery drain is still

a little rough. I always turn facebook, fb messaging and Slacker off - just sucks that I can't uninstall them.

I'll see how it goes today too.

Don't worry about apps that are part of the system. As long as you have them set not to sync they are just there.

What exactly do yo mean by, 'Turning off' FB, messaging, slacker...........

I'm having the exact same issues. The Rezound has a way shorter battery life, 4.5 hrs after a full charge. The device runs hotter now and it will not take a charge from a PC while the device is on. This happened all after the update. I can't imagine having to go through tons of settings to reset, re-configure etc for an update. Pretty ridiculous. There should be a way to roll back the update. Pretty disappointing for a device I've had for maybe 2 weeks.

My fix:

1. Factory reset after boot loop. IT guy so everything is backed up regularly.

2. Removed battery.

3. Removed SIM.

4. Boot COMPLETELY w/o SIM.

5. Power down.

6. Replaced Sim.

7. Reboot.

8. Power on and find 4G services.

9. Allow for full charge.

10. Drained all day to shut off w/o changing settings.

11. Charge again.

12. Power down.

13. Power on holding power and down volume for recovery.

14. Run battery monitor, 16 hours uptime; 77%, display, 8% cell standby, cell usage non existent on charts even with 20 min talk time.

Like budone stated possible Verizon update or radio issue none the less. 16 hours no boot loop on 3G. Phone was boot looping every 3+ hours when charge went below 20% on 3G/CDMA. 4G is on only when using data, no real advantage for talking.

Same here! My phone was absolutely perfect before the update. Now my battery is draining super fast. I am also having severe overheating problems. Last night my phone went to 122 degrees!!! Not safe!!! My phone is super flaky now! Not only do I have the Verizon Location Agent running constantly (whatever that is??) but now My Verizon Mobile runs automatically trying to get me to pay my bill days before it is due and will not let me do anything - not even make a call!!! If I was late maybe that would be understandable but as is it is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!!. I have been a customer for 5 years or more with no payment problems.

Can we get a support forum please!!!!!!!!!!! IS ANYONE OUT THERE LISTENING?!?!?!?

Sounds like to me this update has done more worse than it has good. and this is'nt the first time that it has happened either. they pushed out an update out on the incredible and it messed it up an It took 3 to 4 months to fix it.

tidbits it was definitely the Verizon location services and a SIM conflict that are contributing to the issue with my phone. Never had a boot loop issue until that update. Polling has subsided with a factory reset but today stuck in boot loop when I changed to 3G just to see what happened. I didn't reboot, just made the radio change under mobile settings.

im having the exact same issue with my Rezound. if i do not touch my phone it goes form full charge to dead in 6 hours and the battery gets BLAZING hot. ive done everything possible except for a master reset, which i will be doing tonight.

my phone hasnt gone into sleep mode since tuesday 1/31/12 all because of Verizon Location Agent.

That statement has nothing to do with thinking that I should be "immune to phone issues". You need to read my entire post more carefully. I made that statement in protest to the changes VZW has made to make "My Verizon Mobile" run automatically days before your bill is due trying to force you to pay your bill. This is not an "issue" but a purposeful change by VZW to the "My Verizon Mobile" app. It runs automatically and goes directly to bill payment and will not let you do anything - not even make a call - until you pay your bill even though it is not due for days. Enter a phone number press call and "My Verizon Mobile" pops up on bill pay. I am not a child and have never had payment problems and don't need this kind of nanny harrasment!

Can folks tell me what version of the VLA is causing the issue? I've got Verizon Location Agent 0.0.0.62. Mine is a brand new Rezound and I just got the OTA overnight. I notice that the update online is version 2.x.x.x (forgot the rest). So is it the VLA causing the battery drain, and if so, which one, or might it be something else in the OTA released by HTC (with Verizon content).

If it is the Verizon agent, wouldn't that point to it being something Verizon needs work on? I called Verizon support today, referenced all this online material, and that in other forums as well.. They also checked and saw how many "1" ratings the update to VLA has received and opened a problem ticket and I received an email (with the agents email address) to follow up with. Have other folks reported this to Verizon tech support and, if so, what were you told?

I'm not seeing any overheating, and perhaps to early for me to tell if I'm seeing the same battery burn through. When I look at what applications have been using the battery, VLA is not on the list, as others have said it was. I am using Google Location Services and have the Verizon Location Services unchecked in settings.

Appreciate any input.

First, I LOVED my phone prior to 27JAN12 and am trying to get back to that state! I have noticed even with Verizon Location Services turned off this,VLA, will still run. Battery use does not report this app running but under task manager it is utilizing resources (not cached). If someone can explain the drastic change in battery usage and performance that these apps aren't catching it would be appreciated.

I have factory reset phone at least twice to start from a solid base for testing. Performance apps like AnTuTu and Quadrant show phone is performing below its previous baseline and no where near Razor or Nexus.

Also, I run A LOT (physical fitness) and the GPS (primary), VLA, and Google(secondary) tracking have been performing horribly when mapping my workouts about 5% - 25% variance on same track (3.68mi - 7.75mi). Very disappointed in the way this update was handled and pushed. HTC is responsible for the specific OS of the phone but Verizon should be testing and ensuring that an update pushed through their network for their customers with verizon updates attached are tested and ready for production.

I have given serious thought to unlocking and rooting to play on a developer level and remove all possibilities. However, it's not my place to fix a Verizon/HTC issue when I already have employment.

Any android u can't kill things that are preinstalled in the phone like blockbuster. Did u do a task killer through android market? I was told if u have a phone that has 2.1 or sooner it comes with a task killer so the task killers out there are purposeless ur going to waste more battery as u said it keeps on coming back. If u leave it then it will go dormant.

You do know that you are force closing system apps, all the apps but 5 or 6 is required for the system to function correctly and if you are closing these regularly this is your main issue...

All items with a plus next to them are system apps and should not be closed.

Neato, gold star! You didn't read were I stopped killing apps and never closed any system apps right? Like Google, HTC, or Verizon because all three have a reason for being there? Look just below the apps and how I stated that in the post. Also, I used HTC forums to verify system apps that's why they're running.Thanks for the plus's though they look cool.

I now know more than I ever wanted about Google's version of Linux, Googux.. Linoog.. Please post helpful information. Posts here and on HTC forum have isolated it to the VLA not allowing the phone to sleep and over polling the verizon towers. We found this after budone advised of a battery app to monitor usage on the device. VLA and phone usage was up to 24% and thats on 29 minutes of talk time between two full charges which led to looking into what was utilizing the radio. App killing was to see how often they restarted and why, since I don't have developer access. I'm limited with tools and looking for viable ones without rooting and killing a warranty that may be used shortly.

Do you have any other way to see how often an app is utilizing resources or baseline for how often they run? That could be helpful! Or why I, the customer, am troubleshooting a Verizon/HTC issue?

Nah, use a preinstalled task killer and you'll never see all the running apps or know what is cached. Market apps have more functionality than preinstalled apps. Proof is I would have caught the battery usage with the preinstalled app vice a market battery monitor which preinstalled missed.

My temproary fix that has restored 90% of my phones original functionality:

1 power down

2 remove battery and SIM

3 Replace battery

4 power on phone will ask for SIM

5 phone *#*#4636#*#*

6 CDMA EVDO/LTE – Auto(mine was still in CDMA)

7 power down

8 replace SIM

9 power on and let SIM register

VLA still draining battery.

*** BACKUP DATA TO PC or EXT SD*** somehow I think someone will miss this message

Factory reset.

Phone will last on full charge 6+ hours or more with 2 hours and 45 minutes of usage including a run GPS tracked for 52 minutes, messing with apps, and 4G LTE on. It is defintiely better than before which an hour of usage would kill the battery. Crossing fingers no boot loops since verifying radio settings above.

Have you passed this along to Verizon? As I've indicated they opened a case for me on this, and even brought HTC into a conference call. They can see the vast number of "1" ratings on the VLA update. Yet, it doesn't seem to be affecting every phone or not every phone the same way. My phone goes to sleep just fine (at least appears so). Others have posted no impact at all after the OTA, so there is another characteristic to this I think that has yet to be uncovered (although I agree I think the root is VLA). Again, if there is something you've worked out I don't think it can hurt to pass it along to VZW. I'm not sure posting it here guarantees that. :-)

Battery monitor widget showed phone usage at 24%. AnTuTu help analyze battery. I have factory reset the phone but believe it was ASTRO file manager to view CPU usage and cached. VLA was running multiple instances constantly and would not sleep before factory reset. Why I don't know and probably never will. I have slowed on the testing since I have tons of work of my own and this phone was just for fun.

Verizon store did nothing and said that the OTA was not having issues the weekend I brought it in. After reading numerous posts and having some data I will at least try for a new battery since charge is only going to 98%-99%, even after bump charge(budone thanks again)

Just heard from the Verizon Tech Rep I've been working with that HTC is now fully aware of the problem and that VZW and HTC are trying to resolve.. obviously no time frames for a fix or how it would be delivered. That said, at least good to hear it is on the radar.. I'd still recommend that if you're having the issue to call in and try to get a problem ticket assigned.

I wouldnt waste a lot of time calling verizon looking for a fix or even a chance at an honest answer. I have spent more time on the phone with them over my old Bionic and got nowhere at all.They will tell you what you want to hear and promise call backs that never come just to try to put your mind at ease. I have read a lot of forums with a lot of supposed quick fixes or fixes that dont help at all. Even if they do its for a short time and not worth the effort. One company blames the other and wont take responsibility for anything. It cant hurt for people to call just so they know how many are having issues and can note it but thats all they will do. If who ever needs to create the fix is going to do it, we have to sit back at just wait for the fix.

I cant stand facebook either and there are what, 3 or 4 apps running for it? I'd sooner deal with a draining battery than have that crap on my phone. I dont think I have gotten the boot looping someone mentioned but I am not sure exactly what it is so I may have. Battery drains and a few added apps are the worst I have gotten from the update but its 1 too many things a perfectly good phone could have done without. They ruined one their best phone with that update.
