Has anyone been successful? I've tried the settings noted here and end up with the crazy loud ring every time I dock the phone to charge. Very annoying.

There is no volume control for the dock, unfortunately. And due to an update with Verizon, the bluetooth settings do not remain after you undock the phone.
This is how I deal with it. I got an app from the marketplace called AutomateIt, I set a rule up so that the trigger is whenever the dock's bluetooth address is connected to the phone, it will bring up the phone's settings automatically. From there I open up Wireless and Networks, then Bluetooth Settings, then scroll down to the bottom where it will show that my phone is connected to the dock. Long press that and a little pop up will come up. Click options and then uncheck "phone".
What that does is disconnect the dock's ringer so when my phone rings... its my set ringtones and at the volume I want it to be.
Its a pain, but it works.
