HTC Thunderbolt routinely texts the wrong person

Do other Android phones have this problem? Thunderbolts will sometimes when texting freeze up for a second and then your text will go to some other random person, usually somebody you've also been texting recently.

This is bad news. Verizon, what's the deal here? I know you guys know about this issue. What kind of fix is available and if there is none please give me a Blackberry.

Its been reported on the forums as others are having the same issue with there droids sending Text msg's to random No's an not were there supposed to go you might check other areas of the forum an read the other post on this problem.

An call customer service an let them know your T-bolt is doing this. an see if they can help ya. ! B33

I was told by HTC this evening that Verizon has to reprovision the line . Apparently when a text comes in it is reading the imis number instead of the phone number and therefore the reply is sent to the wrong person.

I have been lucky so far because I havenet seen this issue on my devices but I have seen that is seems to be happening to a number of users on diffrent devices do the issue is network related...

Thanks to the community for your responses.

Its very upseting for the device to send Text messages to the wrong person.This has been brought to our product investigation team and HTC. There is no known resolution at this time. As soon as one is available we will post the information.

It's been happening to me for a few weeks now.... glad I'm not the only one.

Nope. As I said, HTC told me to clear cookies, caches, and history then reboot. If still a problem, which mine is, it is Verizon and they need to reprovision your line, basically delete and totally set it up again. Don't bother calling Verizon CS as they have done nothing for me but lie to me and waste hours of my time. Literally.

It happens more frequently lately, I find the more open strings there are the more likely this happens. Very frustrating and sometimes embarrassing.

For the record this is happening to me also all the time and only started a few weeks ago. Very frustrating.... don't even want to use text anymore and have to watch what I say to my BF. Pretty ridiculous. Should be fixable since this has never happened to me before and I've been using an HTC Android Phone for nearly 2 years.

I found that using handcent fixes the problem of txt going to the wrong person. My wife's phone was doing it non stop. She still gets regular errors trying to send txt's and has to retry but at least they aren't going to the wrong person.

I usually cut VZ a break with crap like this because I realize they are a huge company and if they don't have good change control and testing of device updates they can end up making things worse. BUT, this ranks up there as one of the worst fubar's I think users can experience, next to non-ssl exchange mail being broken on the droid X out of the box. And I would think they would "officially" acknowledge it when people call in complaining about it. But no, just like the random reboot issue we just went through with these phones, it takes them months to even let their tech support people acknowledge there's a problem. Fortunately when I called support the tech I got had a thunderbolt and had been though all the other issues with it as was very understanding and didn't question my intelligence on the issue. My wife is on her 4th Thunderbolt either because of the rebooting problem before they acknowledged it or because the "250 point inspection process" on refurb replacements has sent her two defective phones, including the one she has now.

Update:

Just talked with tech support again and they have acknowleged the issue but obviously no ETA on a fix.

your entire rant is pointless.. this is a froyo 2.2 issue on all android devices....

Yes, I am having the same issue. I was going to call Verizon, but I see it may be a waste of time. Now I have to watch what I say in a text because I dont know who will actually get it, come on people, fix this bug already! We dont have time for this!

If it is a 2.2 issue personally I'm pointing out my niece and my dad and my self as well as other family all with 2.2 until the thunderbolt we never had problems to do with really anything. We've had Droid 2 Droid 2 global
Droid x Droid inc 1 + 2. I am not fully a Droid expert but my niece texts a major amount. Before and after 2.3.

this is accurate. it's an android issue...not verizon. and it's completely random (as far as i can tell). so some of your androids may be fine while others are affected.

VERY BIG PROBLEM!!! I don't like telling my causin I wana make out with him. I'm afraid to text with my thunderbolt.. iv had this happen countless times send a message the screen glitches and next thing I know I'm telling my sister naughty things. I went to Verizon today they said an update sometime this month hopefully should fix problem... Highly unlikely but its hope

Ever since I've had my Thunderbolt, I have used GO SMS for text messaging. I haven't had any problems at all sending text messages, but I've only ever used GO on my phone. It's way better than the stock sms app, anyway.

I had one text one time go to some strange number, but it ALSO went to the person who I replied to. This was before I had the Thunderbolt, I had a Droid 2. I also used GO SMS. It was very, very strange. I replied to my friend's text message. Then she replied back, but I also got a random text back from an unknown number asking me who I was. Somehow my text got delivered to some random number. It was not a number in my address book, or in my phone anywhere. Just a completely random number.

I have had this same problem until I started using the Pro SMS... Since I started using that for my text messages I have not had that problem. Try that and see if that helps. I just don't use the standard text message app that came with it and since this I haven't had no troubles and that's been going good for about 3 months now. Hope this helps...

Yes, same thing happening to me, this really sucks. Luckily it hasn't been anything sensitive or private, but come on, what gives?

My flip phone from 2005 could text just fine, but the Thunderbolt can't perform this simple task?? **bleep**, this total **bleep**.

I have found that if you let the phone load everything after you click Messages (give it a second or two) and clear out threads every so often it greatly reduces the chance of texting the wrong person.

Having the same problem as is a friend with the same phone. Friends have also stated they get texts 'from me' that I never sent to them, or anyone for that matter. I have done a hard reset and replaced the phone once. Still same problem. Verizon has offered no solution except to pay full price for a different phone. Limiting the number of texts/threads in my messaging app seems to help reduce the frequency of this happening, as does rebooting phone but only temporarily. Very embarrassing and severely limiting. Renders the phone practically useless to me, as text is my primary means of communication. There needs to be a solution for this.

Also would like to add this is not a matter of not paying attention to whom I'm texting. I will be in a thread replying to someone and the phone changes who I send it to AFTER I HIT SEND. There is no way to stop it because I have already hit the send button. And no way to predict who it will go to, except that it does seem to choose someone I have recently texted.

I got a text from client, within the thread I made reply and sent it. Somehow the reply wound up a tweet on my Twitter account. How is that even possible when within stock messages?

Because apps like Twitther and Facebook sync numbers and data with the stock contact app and sometime the data gets imported incorrectly, this is why I perfer to input all information it myself instead of allow a app control this... Not all developers understand the correct data intergration process that causes issues.

I have noticed that the pattern of users that have this happen is using some social network that they have configured to update contacts information, I have all my contacts loaded to Google and havent seen any issues with text being misdirected.

im also having this problem. mostly when i turn it sideways to type and send. I have had to apologize many times to friends that are getting my messages thats suppose to go to other people. Lately i have deleted every person i had a convo with just so it wont go to them by accident. Very annoying

This problem has been increasing in frequency for me the past few weeks. I am wrapping up a legal proceeding and cannot afford to have texts sent to the wrong person (it has already happened once). It's so bad I have stopped texting.

I had a Android G1 phone with T-mobile for 3 years and never had this problem.

No insult intended but this is what happens when users get use to the software doing all the thinking for them, the more the software is integrated and set to predict the users reactions or response.. Welcome to the technology world.. I still say this issue is coming from a applications contacts integration process.

I have also been having this problem with my thunderbolt. I have had to be very careful about any text messages I send to anyone in order to phrase them in a way that they wouldn't be bad to have sent to anyone else in my phone. Needless to say this has been a huge pain. I'm going to try to head to the VZW store today and see if they can do anything for me. The problem has been going on for a couple months now at least. The messages generally get sent to someone that has an existing text conversation that I haven't deleted.

Same problem. Just installed the Handcent SMS app, but I haven't used it enough to know whether it will fix the issue or not. I am glad to hear 3rd party apps seemed to fix the problem for others though. This issue is pretty major to have been dragging on for more than a year if you ask me, but what do I know.

Like other people mentioned, I also noticed that it seemed to happen more when my recent conversation list got bigger. I hadn't deleted anything since I got the phone, but yesterday I went through and cleared it out completely. Time will tell whether this and/or the Handcent app will fix the problem.

It will be a long time before I trust my phone to text properly again. That's a pretty crappy feeling to have with what is supposed to be a top of the line phone these days. Steve Jobs is laughing in his grave.

I use a phone primarily for 2 reasons, to make calls and to send texts, if my phone can't do that I have no use for it. I have been building and maintaning computers for over 20 years, I appreciate being welcomed to the technology world none the less.

A few weeks or so after I posted the problem on this forum my phone prompted me for a firmware update. Since the update I haven't seen any problems sending texts. My thunderbolt is current running Android 2.3.4 and HTC Sense 2.1.

The Gingerbread (Android 2.3) included a bug fix for the text message issue. That's why you haven't seen the issue since the update.

Actually the text message bug was an Android OS bug and was affecting many devices across all carriers. Google fixed the error in the Gingerbread version of the OS. Then it was a matter of time before the update was pushed to phones.

Verizon knows its an issue. However they did not bother to tell a single thunderbolt user about it. Verizon does not care about your privacy.

HTC acknowledges its an issue - Verizon has known about this since August 2011 yet does care to fix it.

Just shows you that verizon really does not care about their customers or their privacy at all.

I'm running Android 2.3.4(Gingerbread), using Handcent, HTC Sense V2.1, and this just happened to me. Nothing has been fixed. I just had to explain to a good friend of mine why I was sending provocative texts to his girlfriend. Garbage like this make me want to finally break my vow to myself and buy an iPhone...

it was an issue on froyo.. search every device on google before GB every phone had the problem

remove handcent and see if you still have the problem, when you reply to a text give it a full second before you start typing

delete your threads start new
