This morning, my phone was updated, and now I can't text. I can receive incoming texts, but when I touch the text icon, a box with a spinning circle comes up that says "Please Wait". I've been waiting for 2 hours!

Also, try taking out the battery (if it has one) for 15 seconds, what that does is reset the network connection in the phone. Try dialing *228 hit send then option 2, it forces the update to the nearest tower as well, hopefully those work. If not, try a Factory Reset after all of your data is backed up, and if it still has the problem, call Tech Support, first you'll reach Customer Service, but the number is 1-800-922-0204.
I had the same problem. Do this. Go to Settings>Apps>All>Messages>Force Stop
The "Please Wait" message should now be gone.
i would also clear out a lot of old text threads if you have a year's worth of texts on there.
