I get a this spam symbol + in my notification screen on my Thunderbolt. How can I stop it?
Also, is there a way to remove pre installed apps? w/out rooting the phone?

Spam in the notification window is tied to application. Did you install any recently?
And it would be a NO on removing the pre-installed applications.
Ann is correct about a bad app but the issue is that this has been coming from some Market apps, Free Mp3 Downloader has been one of the bad apps that has been identified...
Try installing AirPush Detector from https://market.android.com/details?id=com.brosmike.airpushdetector&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5icm9zbWlrZS5haXJwdXNoZGV0ZWN0b3IiXQ it should detect the app and you can uninstall it.
