Ya do not have to activate. My Incredible updated just because it was on wifi.
Hopefully the Tbolt will as well.
My Droid X still updates through wifi without being activated so Ann you should be good.
However I have been thinking about switching to the Thunderbolt again. I miss that massive battery some days.
