Update removed option to not sync Google contacts and calendar

Verizon pushed down an update on 11.1.11 (version 2.11.605.5 and since then, I have lost the option to NOT sync my Google contacts and calendar to the native Android apps on my phone.  I use a 3rd party app, Companion Link to sync my Outlook contacts and calendar to my phone and the inability to turn off the Google sync is causing the app to hang up.  (I think.)  The support team at Companion Link has been unable to resolve this issue.  Is anyone else having this issue and does anyone have an idea on how to resolve it?  My husband uses the same app on the Droid X and it works perfectly for him.

Have you checked Settings / Account and Sync /  Account Name and uncheck aoo you dont want to sync or simply uncheck Auto sync on the page with accounts list?

Yes, Auto-sync check box is not checked.  I think this means that Google will not attempt to sync contacts, etc, unless I specifically request the sync?  But I do see that if Auto Sync is checked on, that I still have the option to not sync contacts or calendar.  So I guess there is another issue.  Have opened a ticket with Companion Link to address.
